Ross Video's Furio Goes Live in MLB Network's New Studio K
Formerly the facility’s mailroom and storage facility, Hot Stove’s Studio K was constructed in just over two months and exclusively uses robotic cameras that have the ability to dolly, elevate, pan, tilt, zoom and focus. “MLB Network ran an extensive testing process to find the most capable and accurate robotic camera system on the market today,” said Brad Cheney, Engineering Manager, MLB Network. “During that process, we found that the Ross Furio System was above the rest. We needed a robotic camera that provided non-stop fluid movement that could react instantaneously to user commands to ensure we never missed a shot.” From MLB Network’s control room, one system operator can program the cameras to hit designated marks – something that couldn’t be done with a manned camera system.

UEFA Champions League 2013: Dortmund – Munich Live from Wembley
The host broadcaster ITV had placed the NEP Visions Gemini trucks at the centre of the lateral production. Sound Credit was also on hand installing more than 100 commentary positions. And last but not least, Film and TV was responsible for all the power needs while EBU handled the international distribution feeds.

UEFA Europa League Final with Universal Videohub
Facilitating host broadcasting, comprised of three HD video feeds distributed globally, was Infostrada Sports, who produced the final on behalf of RTL Netherlands and UEFA. Infostrada chose Dutch company United as the technical supplier, and started its preparations for the final in August 2012. Eventually the game would make use of 36 cameras, including many special slow motion models. "At Broadcast Rental, we've supplied equipment for football matches and most types of events," said the company co-owner and CTO, Martijn Swart."Even for a Europa League game, which is generally smaller than the Champions League, this was massive. There were around twenty different broadcasters who wanted to use the signal."

Microphone Usage for Sports Broadcasting
Audio for sports broadcasting is a specialty that places extremely high demands on the equipment - the microphones in particular. They have to sound good while reproducing the sound of a complex, often irregular space; one must be able to set them up within a few hours; they must be easy to handle, yet robust enough to withstand wind and weather, and they must be reliable under rough, everyday conditions. And they must be nearly invisible, since they can’t be allowed to block the view of the event nor of the advertising banners. All this makes life very interesting for the sound engineers, planners, equipment operators and manufacturers who support this special field. Given the great popularity of televised sports broadcasts, the number of people hearing the results can be very large. And the qualitative expectations for sports broadcasting are also very high.

REVIEW: The Eurovision Song Contest 2013
With a 57-year history, the Eurovision Song Contest is the world’s most-watched non-sporting event and this year was broadcast live into 44 countries – as far as Eurovision-mad Australia! 11,000 spectators had secured themselves tickets to the final, enjoying the exuberant party atmosphere and the powerful live sound in the Malmö Arena. The audience helped make the show – becoming an integral part of it when their LED bracelets turned the auditorium into a sea of little lights or lit up to create the national colours of the next artist to enter the stage. This year’s host city Malmö gave a warm and sunny welcome to Eurovision: ESC posters, banners, and T-shirts emblazoned with the butterfly logo and the “We are one” slogan were everywhere. Those not lucky enough to get a ticket for the shows or the rehearsals could visit an open-air stage in Malmö’s city centre, where the ESC artists fitted in live performances of their songs into their tight rehearsal schedule.

Clay Paky Sharpys add Wow Factor for The Script
The Script show, which has been designed to reflect the name of the Tour - ‘#3’, features a huge video backdrop with three parallel video fingers that reach out into the audience, both along the floor and overhead. Although Thompson uses the Sharpy's sparingly he has worked them into his design seamlessly, using them to deliver high impact, audience-embracing effects. Where they are used each look exploits the sharp parallel beam acting to punctuate the music and the video content, both from the floor and side stage. The Script’s current tour, entitled # 3, played at some of the UK’s biggest venues, including Liverpool’s Echo Arena, and London’s O2 Arena and Wembley Stadium.

Robe Gives It Large at One Big Weekend
The high-profile three day musical extravaganza staged in Ebrington Square, Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland, kicked off the UK festival season in style! The lighting equipment for this stage was supplied by the HSL Group incorporating PSI who provided all rigging and support. The two companies have recently merged offering even more comprehensive rental operations throughout the UK and Ireland. The 1xtra / In New Music We Trust stage was located inside The Venue, a 5000 capacity multi-purpose temporary structure erected for Derry’s 2013 year as European Capital of Culture. The house lighting rig in here also contains 24 x Robe moving lights installed by Paul Jones of Ethix Management – and these were combined with the rest of the kit supplied by HSL – for the Radio 1 event. Routledge’s design aimed to deliver something more diverse than the standard festival lighting package.

The Netherlands Inaugurates New King
The company responsible for most of the TV production was Hilversum-based UNITED, which captured images from three key locations: the royal palace on the Dam, Museum Square and the royal barge as it toured the canals of the capital. Five OB trucks were used to broadcast the festivities, along with just under 100 cameras, ten uplink trucks and 350 employees. “This production differed from others primarily in its sheer importance,” recalls Bolke Burnaby Lautier, Manager Operations Sports and Events with UNITED. “With literally millions of viewers following the event live all over the world on TV, any technical failure could have proved catastrophic.” Crucial to a positive outcome was the quality of communications between the individual live locations. In all the outside broadcast vehicles deployed, UNITED chose to rely upon intercom systems from RTS.

Alex Buono Takes ‘Saturday Night Live’ to 4K with AJA Ki Pro Quad
Buono has been working on SNL since 1999, and has recently been experimenting with a variety of 4K workflows on the show’s pre-produced segments. “We love the look of the Canon C500 camera, but with our production turnaround schedule, we don’t have time to deal with processing RAW camera files. We tried alternate 4K recording devices, but Ki Pro Quad is the only one that let us go straight from the camera to ProRes. Not only do we save a ton of processing time, but we’re also chewing up way less hard drive space—uncompressed RAW ties up at least 1TB of storage per hour of footage; with Ki Pro Quad recording to ProRes, we’re down to less than 600GB per hour.”
