USC Annenberg Deploys Telemetrics Camera Robotics Systems to Prepare Students for Broadcasting Careers

The University of South California (USC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism has installed a sophisticated Telemetrics camera robotics system in three of its state-of-the-art television studios and two large event spaces within its newest building, Wallis Annenberg Hall. USC Annenberg is a national leader in education and scholarship in the fields of communication, journalism, public diplomacy and public relations. The School of Journalism offers students a range of experience in broadcast news production, and its award-winning Annenberg Television News (ATVN) has earned an outstanding reputation in the broadcast community.

The Telemetrics camera robotics system is integrated with USC Annenberg’s Ross OverDrive production control and other leading systems to create a high-end, automated news broadcasting center with advanced features and functionality.

“We modeled our studio operations and installations to mirror a top 10 market nightly news show, and the Telemetrics camera robotics system was the only one we evaluated that provided the combination of ease of use, advanced capabilities and affordability that met those requirements,” said Chuck Boyles, Director of Multimedia Technologies, USC Annenberg. “Our main objective and responsibility is to provide the best training, experience and education to prepare students for post-graduate careers in broadcasting. The Telemetrics camera robotics system definitely opens doors for our students to higher-level opportunities by providing them with hands-on experience using technology that is typically not available at most colleges.”

In addition to automation, USC Annenberg also wanted the ability to manually control remote pan/tilt camera heads, which Telemetrics’ camera control software accommodates. However, since installing the Telemetrics camera robotics system, USC Annenberg’s staff and students have grown accustomed to employing full automation and rarely use manual controls.

“The versatility and flexibility of switching from an automated camera setup to a manual setup was a capability that we loved about the Telemetrics system. Since the system’s automated camera setup is so simple to use, we’ve stayed with it ever since,” said John Goldsmith, Production Supervisor, USC Annenberg.

“The Telemetrics camera robotics system is so user intuitive that it doesn’t require much training. Students are able to quickly learn how to use the system and dive right in to operating multiple cameras at once,” Goldsmith continued.

The decision to install Telemetrics camera robotics in its facility wasn’t a difficult one given the system’s capabilities and a strong recommendation from Advanced Design Group, the consultant brought in to evaluate potential systems. Advanced Broadcast Solutions installed three Telemetrics PT-RM-1 Pan/Tilt heads, three RCCP-1 remote camera control panels and one Telepod Elevating Tripod System. The products were deployed in three studios and two large event spaces, including a 150-seat auditorium that also serves as a theater.

“We are proud that such a prestigious, well-respected university has selected Telemetrics camera robotics systems to educate and prepare students for careers in broadcasting,” said Anthony Cuomo, President, Telemetrics. “We look forward to working with these students at USC Annenberg and in the future as they embark upon careers to spearhead further efficiencies in television production. The confidence USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism has placed in Telemetrics’ technology is a true testimony to the performance, quality and efficiency of our camera robotics systems.”
