RTVE Dives in to 15th FINA World Championships with EVS

EVS, the leading provider of live video production systems, has been chosen by host broadcaster, Radio Televisión Española (RTVE), to provide a range of its solutions for live coverage of the 15th FINA World Championships held in Barcelona (BNC2013) from 19 July to 4 August 2013. EVS technology, including servers and storage solutions, were deployed in OB vans at each of the four event venues to provide a fully integrated solution from ingest to archive. Spanish audiovisual services provider Lavinia Group was also commissioned to supply and install the live production workflow.

Acting as the host broadcaster of the international aquatic games for the second time in ten years, RTVE decided on an integrated end-to-end file-based production workflow with EVS technology at its core. EVS XT series servers in each of the OB vans were used to ingest multiple live feeds, as well as clip creation and slow-motion replays. EVS’ IPDirector content and production asset management suite scheduled recordings of the five live feeds sent to two EVS XT3 (8 HD channel) production servers (five input channels and three outputs for each XT3 server) in the production gallery. Once ingested, content was transferred to EVS XStore NAS central storage. Four clip loggers for live media logging and four EVS Xedio CleanEdit non-linear editors were installed

"With the integration of EVS technology and Avid’s iNEWS newsroom management system, journalists were able to quickly find the images they need using the metadata created during the ingest process," commented Victor Sanchez, head manager tech support & maintenance at RTVE. "Knowing that we have the leading systems for live sports production allowed us to deliver the quality and professionalism that this type of international event requires."

EVS’ IPBrowse application installed on Avid NewsCutter editing workstations at the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) provided direct access to central storage, allowing them to search, trim and deliver the required media or EDL to an Avid online editing solution for final edit. Editors were able to automatically retrieve all associated metadata along with any file. Two IPDirectors handled all playout - one to create RTVE’s own highlights package and provide content to international broadcast services served by the host broadcaster, the other to deliver content for DTT / CCTV screens at each of the four venues.

At the end of each day, the content held in the central storage, along with all files created in the OB vans, was saved to SATA removable disks in XDCAM 50 Op1A format, and sent to RTVE’s home studio, where an EVS XSquare station automatically saved the media to an Avid ISIS shared storage system and updated the broadcaster’s Avid Interplay to retrieve all the metadata associated with the event. All the logs created during the course of the championships were recovered in RTVE’s Avid iNEWS system for future use by journalists.

Yeray Alfageme, broadcast technical manager of BCN2013 said: "The technical capability and reliability of EVS systems provide the best guarantees when covering an important event like FINA World Championship. The technical support we receive from EVS was also excellent; they were always looking to meet our needs or helping to adapt the system to suit our requirements."
