NHL’s Hurricanes increase live production capacity with EVS

Maximizing workflows with EVS provides more angles, more access and room to grow

EVS, the leader in live video technology for broadcast and new media productions, today announced that CanesVision, production studio for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, has invested in EVS live production solutions to update its production workflows. The PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC, is home to the Hurricanes as well as to the North Carolina State University men’s basketball team.

“We chose EVS because we were looking for a way to maximize our production potential,” said Logan McDonald, producer/system administrator at CanesVision. “We needed access to more camera feeds and greater capacity – all at once.”

The system includes two XT3 production servers, providing versatile SD/HD, 1080p or 4K configurations to flex with CaneVision’s needs.

EVS’ IPDirector content management suite, each with a dedicated operator workstation, is critical to the control room operations. One workstation is dedicated to replay content, another for clipping and assets. A third operator exclusively creates playlists for time outs and intermissions and exports clips to fiber connected storage for editors to post on external outlets. The system enables operators to focus on specific tasks while providing deep archive for back-and-forth media exchange and quick content turnaround.

Added McDonald, “When there are breaks in the game for reviews, the more angles you can access, the more you can fill time lapses with exclusive shots. With access to eight channels, it makes a big difference on hard-to-call plays and on the viewer experience.”

The power and reliability of EVS solutions were important to the decision-making process. “EVS is valuable because you know it’s the biggest workhorse in the control room,” said McDonald.  “It’s not going to fail on you, and that’s why it’s more than worth the investment.”
