Football Mixing Seminar with Sportcast and Lawo

Sound engineers of Bundesliga producer trained in Rastatt

On March 22/23, 2011, the German TV production company, Sportcast GmbH, hosted a seminar with sound engineers responsible for the broadcaster’s weekly TV video footage of the Bundesliga (German Premier League) and DFB Cup matches. Featuring Ian Rosam, sound supervisor for Sky Football and quality control at the Olympic Games and football world cups, the event featured an extremely effective knowledge broker. The main goal of the event was to convey football as entertainment.

In particular, the importance of good stadium sound was emphasised, including the reproduction of balls being kicked or the fans chanting, in order to create a football broadcast as authentic and appealing as possible. During the seminar, nearly 40 participants were introduced to very coherent concepts that will help to achieve consistent sound output from the Bundesliga matches. Particularly important in this respect was the increasing practice to mix signals according their loudness rather than the audio level. At their new facility in Rastatt, Lawo set up two large demo rooms as well as two mc² consoles for use by the participants. This enabled their newly gained knowledge to be tested immediately. Since the beginning of 2011, Sportcast uses an audio quality control system that checks every weekly broadcast; this provides a long-term guarantee that the audio quality of German football broadcasts will continue to improve significantly in the future.
