Indian Premier League supported by Creative Technology

ODECO 16mm advertising screens at the IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL), was launched in April 2008 and has since gone from strength to strength. Played as a Twenty20 cricket tournament, the IPL consists of eight franchises, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Mohali, each of which is responsible for managing a single cricket team. The league is played over 44 days and features 59 games with the winners of the taking home around US$2million.

Created to provide cricket entertainment for spectators and viewers alike, the IPL is already proving to be a big hit with both players and fans. It is with this in mind that many rules have been devised specifically for this tournament – each team must have a minimum of 16 players, use a minimum of eight local players and have no more than four foreign players.

Creative Technology London was contracted by digital solutions company, Technology Frontiers India, to provide 298 linear metres of ODECO 16mm advertising screens which were positioned around the pitches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Despite the logistical challenges of relocating the perimeter screens from one venue to the other dependent on where the matches were held, and notwithstanding the 18 hour overnight drive between the stadiums, CT were able to ensure that the screens were fully positioned and operational 100% of the time.

Originally contracted for just the group games, CT’s commitment to the Indian Premier League was extended after the competition organisers switched the semi-finals to the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai in response to a bomb exploding near the ground. In true IPL fashion, the finals went ahead despite heightened security measures and subsequently CT were granted a further contractual extension to include both the final and the third place play off matches.

Project manager for CT, Jilon Miah was also pleased with the success of the project. “The experience of working in a new location and environment enables CT to extend its reach into previously unchartered regions. This project has been an extremely successful learning experience in providing us with the understanding and knowledge of working in harmony with India’s climate and culture. It places us in an excellent position to extend our business in this area in the future.
