Sony Professional renews Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) studio camera system

Sony Professional has won a Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) tender in an EU tender procedure for conversion of the broadcaster's HD and UHD system camera technology

Sony Professional will replace the MDR studio system cameras with HDC-3500 camera chains, including HDVF-EL75//U OLED viewfinders. MDR will also be given the option to upgrade to UHD and IP 2110 in the future. Thanks to their integrated 2/3" 4K-CMOS sensors with global shutter technology, the new system cameras will allow MDR to improve their image quality in live production. The CMOS sensor technology produces artefact-free, razor-sharp images in 4K quality (2000 TV lines resolution), with low noise (-62dB), high sensitivity (F11 at 1080/50p) and wide dynamic range. In addition, a newly developed wide colour gamut prism block supports an extended broadcast-standard colour space according to ITU-R BT.2020.

The 7.4" OLED colour viewfinder HDVF-EL75 also means faster response times for tracking moving objects, and the viewfinder has an unusually high contrast ratio, which affords a significant improvement in focusing, especially in sports broadcasting. As well as the new HDC-3500 camera chains, MDR will also use the new HDCU-3100 camera control unit and RCP-3500//U control panels, amongst other things.

In addition to MDR and its subsidiaries (MCS Saxony, MCS Saxony Anhalt, MCS Thuringia and Media Mobil GmbH [MMG]), Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) and Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR) also have the option to procure the corresponding system cameras and necessary accessories, software and services on the basis of individual call-offs via the concluded framework agreement. One reason for MDR's decision to completely update the current studio camera systems is to remain at the cutting edge of technology: by establishing the IP standard SMPTE ST 2110 on the market, this development is also particularly important for MDR with regard to aligning the studio camera system based on a forward-looking IP workflow. However, another important reason for MDR's new equipment is to ensure operational reliability. The technology will therefore be replaced as soon as possible. Sony Professional won the tender not only thanks to their latest technology, but also thanks to their comprehensive service offering in which workflows are made more efficient due to the company's years of expertise in the field of system cameras and production.
