SKY Italia: Flexible broadcast monitoring

Sky Italia Playout

SKY Italia is the Italian pay-TV owned by News Corporation Limited. Although it was only launched in 2003, it already reaches 4,800,000 subscribers with 180 thematic and pay-per-view channels. This rapid expansion resulted in the need for a new site in Milan.

Barco's Networked Broadcast Monitoring System

SKY Italia, that had been relying on numerous Barco products for years, decided this was a good time to update its infrastructure to a more advanced technology. They soon felt confident that Barco's new Networked Broadcast Monitoring System (NBMS), which distributes video sources and metadata over an IP network, was the right solution.

Thanks to the great teamwork between Barco's and SKY Italia's engineers, the system was installed and configured. It currently handles 200 SDI and 352 PAL inputs, along with their relevant audio.

SKY Italia's main reason to choose for NBMS, was the flexibility the system offers. Using Ethernet networking technology as the backbone for distributing real-time content , provides SKY Italia with an efficient way to get the content wherever it is needed, both within and beyond the control room. It also helps to save costs, as the required router capacity and monitoring inputs can be greatly reduced. Furthermore, SKY Italia praises the NBMS's security and continuity warranty, which is key in a 24/7 environment.
