LEMO UK Gains ISO14001 and OHSAS Accreditation

.

LEMO, manufacturer and distributor of high performance push-pull connectors and cable assemblies, has achieved registration of its UK operation to the environmental management system standard ISO 14001 as well as to the health and safety system standard OHSAS 18001, to add to its ISO9001 certification.

ISO 14001 recognises that a company is managing the impact of its operations on the environment in both the short and long term, and LEMO’s management system has been structured accordingly.

LEMO recognises its social responsibility as a global organisation to assess and regulate the impact they have on the environment, and the UK accreditation follows on from accreditation of our Swiss manufacturing centre to ISO 14001 in 2013.

Managing that impact also means working more efficiently and creating a better working environment for employees and this has been reflected in our new premises in Worthing which feature bright open facilities and a clean working environment for all. The building incorporates a green roof with slow-release rain capture which proved their worth during the storms in recent months - with the area immediately surrounding the building not suffering surface flooding as happened in nearby streets.

LEMO UK also installed high efficiency heat pump systems for heating and cooling the building thus making a considerable contribution to carbon reduction in comparison to having a conventional boiler, and, whilst the building is all glass, the use of high thermal efficiency materials ensures that heat losses and gains are minimised.

For many years, LEMO UK has continuously sought to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill. Wherever possible packaging is re-used – additionally the LEMO tri-wall boxes are popular with customers and are frequently found to be used by them for storage or by their employees for domestic removals.

Wood from our cable reels is supplied to a local charity, the Aldingbourne Trust, who use it in their activities to support people with learning difficulties to reach their potential.

Any other waste materials such as oils, metal turnings, and general office waste are, wherever possible, recycled through accredited recycling organisations.accredited recycling organisations.

The company has made significant strides in reduction of the use of paper within offices, through use of electronic documents as well as double-sided printing where printed documents are still required, resulting in major cost savings as well as a clean and safe office and shop-floor environment.

Supporting this the company has also evolved its health and safety systems over many years resulting in accreditation to the OHSAS 18001 standard at the same time as its ISO 14001 certification. OHSAS 18001 confirms that a company’s systems promote a safe and healthy working environment by providing a framework that helps to identify and control health and safety risks, reduces the potential for accidents, aids legal compliance and improves overall performance.

The full audit to both standards took place in July at the same time as the successful re-certification of LEMO UK’s ISO9001 management system by the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS).
