Leader Instruments Announces LV 5837 and LV 5838 Audio Monitors

Leader's LV 5838 audio monitor.

Leader Instruments has chosen IBC2012 for the worldwide launch of two dedicated audio monitoring instruments: the LV 5837 and LV 5838. Both are designed to allow audio signals and levels to be checked quickly and accurately in environments such as sound recording studios, television studios, post-production houses or broadcast presentation and playout facilities.

The LV 5837 accepts up to eight AES/EBU stereo digital audio feeds at sampling frequencies from 32 to 192 kilohertz. It has a wide range of measurement capabilities including audio level metering in dBFS, Nordic, BBC and DIN scales. Up to 16 audio channel bargraphs can be viewed simultaneously on the instrument's 6.3 inch TFT LCD colour screen. Peak hold can be switched between true-peak, PPM Type I or PPM Type II modes and zero to 5 seconds duration in 0.5 or 1 second steps.

Any stereo pair among 16 source channels can be selected and displayed as a Lissajous waveform, showing the relative sound energies for each channel and providing instant warning of a phase-inverted source. The correlation coefficient between the signal pair assigned to the Lissajous display is presented as a value between plus and minus one.

The LV 5837 audio monitor includes a surround sound display for operation in stereo and 5.1 formats with user-assignable channel mapping and switchable automatic gain control.

Status display indicates audio levels using values based on the assigned scale plus nine error detection parameters: level-over, clipping, mute, silent, parity, validity, cyclic redundancy check, Dolby CRC and frame location.

Loudness measurement can be performed in mono, stereo and 5.1 surround. The loudness mode includes momentary, short-term and long-term level display plus a numeric chart display showing the change in short-term and long-term response along a timeline of 1, 4, 10 or 30 minutes or 1, 2, 4, 6, 13 or 24 hours. Loudness can be checked in ARIB, ATSC or EBU mode or within user-configured parameters including block size, overlap, absolute gating, relative gating and target level. A logging feature can be used to record and timestamp detected errors or long-term loudness values. These can be captured at intervals of 1 second for up to a week.

An optional module is available for the LV 5837 and LV 5838 to support Dolby E multichannel encoding, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus.

Leader's LV 5838 has the same feature set as the LV 5837 plus the ability to extract and measure audio from 3G-SDI, HD-SDI and SD-SDI signal streams.

Each instrument is housed in a rack-mountable free-standing 3 rack-units high x half-rack width x 72 mm front-to-back case with a detachable transit handle. An LV 5837 or LV 5838 can be racked side-by-side with a traditional half-rack width 3 rack-units high waveform/vectorscope such as a Leader LV 5330 or LV 5770.

The LV 5837 and LV 5838 operate from 10 to 18 volts direct-current or included universal mains adaptor. Rear connectors include external reference (BNC), digital audio channels 1/2 to 15/16 (BNCs), remote control port, Ethernet port. DVI-D output, plus SDI inputs A and B and SDI output (BNCs). Both instruments are designed for indoor or outdoor use at ambient temperatures of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius, up 85 per cent relative humidity (non-condensing) and 2 kilometres altitude.
