Surround Sound Production Era Begins at RTM Malaysia

Auditorium Perdana, a 700 seat hall, has been equipped with an AURUS/NEXUS sound control room since 2008. In 2010 the console DSP was upgraded to provide the full channel complement. Dolby-E embedders and HD-SDI modules for the NEXUS were also installed to support the RTM goal of making the transition to full HD by 2015. STAGETEC and Dolby® were invited to conduct the first surround sound recording for RTM in collaboration with the RTM Audio Team.
The production was guided by Geoffrey Low, brought on board by Dolby Singapore. Geoffrey is a well-known audio engineer and lecturer in Singapore who has produced many broadcast music mixes in the region. “It was my first time working with the AURUS and I’m very impressed with the surround capability and functionality. The NEXUS provided flexible on the fly audio routing enabling all the inputs to be monitored, recorded and mixed at the same time” says Geoffrey.

The production was part of a larger initiative from Dolby to bring surround sound to the shores of Malaysia. STAGETEC, together with partner Dolby, ensured proper workflow integration. ”We are glad to have partnered with Dolby in order to improve the broadcast knowledge in Malaysia. We will continue to support RTM together with Dolby to create a strong partnership to achieve national goals”, says David Chan, Managing Director of SALZBRENNER STAGETEC MEDIAGROUP Malaysia. “The live hands-on experience will certainly help RTM’s audio team acquire the knowledge and skills required for surround sound production.”
