ARRI announces the upcoming release of Software Update Packet (SUP) 2.0 for AMIRA cameras, and the subsequent release of SUP 3.0. The former unlocks 4K UHD recording for high-resolution pipelines, while the latter enables MPEG-2 MXF recording for streamlined, broadcast-friendly workflows. Together they stretch the already wide spectrum of AMIRA’s deliverable options at both ends of the scale, making the camera an even more versatile production tool.

A lot has been written in the industry trade publications regarding 4K in the last few months. Lets take a look at what and where 4K is today: There are essentially two 4K imaging formats today- one was developed for digital cinematography with a 1.86 to 1 aspect ratio, 4096 x 2160 lines and the second, technically referred to as UHDTV with a 16x9 aspect ratio, 3840 x 2160 lines. A majority of today's 4K cameras shoot in the 1.86 to 1 ratio.

Sony and FIFA TV will test the Ultra HD technology at three matches of the 2013 Confederations Cup 2013 to help decide whether it will be employed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

During the hit match of Polish football league T-Mobile Ekstraklasa, Legia Warszawa vs Lech Poznan, first time in Poland  ATM used 4K technology to enhance the possibility of content creation. In cooperation with the suppliers 4VISION Poland and TWENTY4SEVEN ATM got a SONY F-55 camera with CA4000 and BP 4000 adaptors, a FUJINON 19-90 Cabrio Lens, and  EVS XT3 sever with Epsio for the replay of super zoom images.

NanoTech Entertainment announced that it has expanded its 4K Studios with the opening of a second facility in Hollywood California.  The new facilities are located on "The Lot", a famous industry location that has been home of some of the greatest influences in film, including Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Sam Goldwyn.

Chrosziel’s Aladin broadcast involves technology used in film production. As part of 4K broadcast productions, it also facilitates the integration of necessary telezoom capabilities so that operators receive their demands and returns as usual, as well as allowing focus pulling in production. Sony, host broadcaster HBS, lead contractor Telegenic and Brazilian contractor GloboSat together selected the Aladin broadcast to control the employed cinema zooms. It was standing room only at the recent FUJIFILM 4K Day held at the Digital Motion Picture Center (DMPC) in Culver City, California on August 13, with attendees eager to discover what makes a 4K lens truly 4K. The crowd - a cross section of DPs, engineers, company executives, TV and film rental house personnel – got to see the much buzzed about 4K PL-mount Cine-Style and Ultra HD lenses for 2/3-inch broadcast cameras operating side by side and participate in a Q&A following detailed presentations by FUJIFILM executives about the nature of 4K optics.

At the 2015 NABShow2015, Mobile TV Group (MTVG), operators of one of the country’s largest fleets of mobile production units, will demonstrate the industry’s first 4K sports mobile unit with 2/3-inch cameras - the 38 FLEX - with FUJINON’s new UA80x9 4K Ultra HD lens on a Grass Valley LDX 81 4K camera. The 53’ expando will be capable of sports and entertainment productions with up to 12 4K cameras.

4K London, one of Britain's most active providers of digital cinematography support services, has invested in Leader LV5330 and LV5380 multi-standard video signal analysers for integration into its high-specification electronic imaging systems. The sales were made via Leader's UK reseller Thameside TV which is based in Shepperton.

After Coldplay and Andrea Bocelli’s concerts in 2012, Muse’s concert in July 2013 4K Live records by United, a dutch subsidiary of Euro Media Group, Euro Media Group was on BNP Paribas Tennis Masters in Bercy (Paris). GloboSat’s new TV OB truck is producing three 4K live broadcasts from World Cup matches played in the Maracana stadium, in Rio de Janeiro: The round of 16 match on 28 June, the  Quarter-Final on 4 July and the Final on 13 July. The vehicle, which was completed just in time for this year’s FIFA World Cup, is Brazil’s first 4K OB truck, and is fitted with audio equipment from Lawo and state-of-the-art RAVENNA IP networking technology.

The “El Classico - FC Barcelona vs. Real Madrid “  is one of the hottest matches on the planet which had been viewed by close to half a billion (~500mio) viewers from around the globe. And for those who did not see that match the FC Barcelona won the match by 4:3 goals. What most viewers did not know is that the game was partially produced with 4K technology several Sony F-55 and Fujinon ZK-Series (Cabrio) 4K Cine Zoom Lenses. The Spanish Football league LFP is striving to become the first football league in the world to produce matches in 4K on a regular basis.

VITEC, a worldwide leader in advanced video encoding and streaming solutions, today announced that it is making it more affordable to stream and distribute 4K content at an MSRP of only $25,000. The MGW Vision real-time encoder produces HEVC bandwidth-efficient 4K IPTV streams for use in broadcast centers, in-house IPTV applications, sports, and live events.

Several 4K productions took place these last weeks at Roland Garros, Wimbledon (together with 3D) and at the just-concluded FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013. New equipment was tested, staff was trained and production concepts were implemented. The 4K production rigorously tested in Belo Horizonte in a joint collaboration between FIFA, Sony and HBS could play an invaluable role in helping FIFA, HBS and other stakeholders prepare for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.

With 4K rapidly gaining hold as the medium of choice in Japan for movies, high quality TV programs and large screen public displays, post houses have turned to Quantel and Pablo Rio to handle 4K post production.
