The Equipment Room Container (ERC) delivery took place at the Estadio do Maracana last week as preparations at the 12 venues of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ enter the final stretch. Pre-assembled and tested in Germany at the systems integrator sonoVTS, the ERC is the hub of all onsite outside broadcast operations at each Broadcast Compound around Brazil, connecting to all operational rooms. The full testing of the facility before it arrived in Brazil saved countless valuable hours for staff at the venues.

hr Decides on BFE Expansion
Hessischer Rundfunk (Hessian Broadcasting Corporation; hr) with headquarters in Frankfurt has decided to commission BFE Studio und Medien Systeme GmbH with the renewal of the SRF dubbing list that has been written using MS-Access. Thereby, it has to do with a solution that organizes and manages the processes between the areas of the administration office, control room, recording, program exchange, interim tape storage, playout and document/archive. In the process, BFE, as a general contractor, is responsible for the planning and installation all the way to putting KSC Manager product expansion into operation. The installation of a KSC Manager system, version 12 or higher, is a requirement for this expansion.

Open Media Centre in the 12 Host Cities
National and international media visiting Rio de Janeiro for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil will have access to the Open Media Centre (OMC), located at the Forte de Copacabana, from June 9 until July 14, 2014. The Open Media Centre is a multipurpose space with customized facilities and services for press professionals, including free broadband internet connectivity, workstations with equipment for shared use, multiple television screens to follow the matches, an auditorium for press conferences and briefings, radio studios, broadcasting services and locations for shooting footage.

ENG Centre - The Gateway to Brazil
The FIFA TV Electronic News Gathering (ENG) crews have been going through their final preparations at the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, and each of them made the ENG Centre their first destination. The 45 ENG crews have already started to spread out across Brazil, one following each of the 32 teams, nine FIFA TV Story Crews, one Promo team and three Behind The Scenes teams following FIFA and HBS preparations. The first came through the ENG Centre on Thursday 29 May and the last teams will collect their equipment over the coming two days.

IBC Officially Opend Last Week
The International Broadcast Centre (IBC) for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ has been officially opened following a ceremony at the Riocentro complex in Barra da Tijuca attended by FIFA General Secretary Jérôme Valcke, FIFA TV Director Niclas Ericson, CEO of the LOC Ricardo Trade, HBS CEO Francis Tellier and several other local dignitaries and VIPs. In his keynote speech, which preceded the ribbon cutting ceremony, Valcke explained the importance of the IBC in aiding broadcasters to transmit the events in Brazil to the viewers around the world. “The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ has begun even more today with the opening of this facility, which is given to all the media working from Rio de Janeiro. It is the link to the world – from here the world will have access to Rio, access to Brazil, access to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ and the 12 host cities.”

Ligabue Gets Lucky with Robe
Multi-talented Italian superstar Luciano Ligabue – a prolific singer-songwriter, film director and award winning author - played a series of intimate concerts at the start of his 2014 “Mondovisione” tour which builds up to stadium shows in the summer, with Lighting Designer Jo Campana including 20 x Robe ROBIN Pointe moving lights on his rig. Campana, who has worked with the artist since 2009, first saw the Pointes in action at this year’s Sanremo Music Festival in March – where he was also working for the artist. The fixtures immediately caught her attention, so much so, that he decided to include the 20 Pointes for the initial show on the tour.

Leading broadcast network connectivity and streaming experts SIS LIVE and Red Bull Media House have set a Guinness World Record for the ‘most concurrent live web streams for an event’ in a spectacular live music broadcast from the EDF Energy London Eye. SIS LIVE worked with Red Bull Media House to deliver an ambitious and unique project to mark Red Bull Music Academy’s 15th birthday, to broadcast 31 concurrent live streams to more than a million viewers all over the world. The ‘Red Bull Revolutions in Sound’ event in November has now been independently verified by experts at Guinness World Records and confirmed as a record.

ESC's LD is ‘blown away’ by the Power of Clay Paky
TV lighting designer extraordinaire Kasper Lange was ‘blown away’ by the power of the Clay Paky fixtures used in his highly efficacious lighting design for TV event of the year, Eurovision. Denmark based Lange worked with Eurovision’s creative director Per Zachariassen to create a huge, structural lighting design that complemented the show’s titanic ‘diamond’ stage. Lange crafted a clean, architectural lighting look that allowed the angular stage to ‘open and close’ creating a dynamic mix of open and intimate lighting looks.

It’s Darts, but not Quite as We’ve Known It!
Live production infrastructure from Blackmagic Design has been an integral part of the multi-cam workflow now used during coverage of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) European Tour. Production company Darts in Motion has already been involved with events in the Netherlands and Germany in 2014, and are now preparing for tournaments in Austria and Gibraltar alongside three more in Germany later in the year. Earlier this year, the PDC sold the exclusive rights to betting firms such as Coral and Bet365, who can now stream tournaments live on their websites. The PDC continues to stream live content produced by Darts in Motion through its own website, via Live PDC, a paid for subscription channel.

EHB Final Four Champions League Relies on LMC´s Antelope Technology
Together with Cologne based production specialist WIGE, LMC provided two state-of-the-art Ultra Slow Motion solutions at the EHB Final Four in Germany. As in 2013 LMC´s Antelope MkIIs was deployed using Fujinon´s 101x HD lens. Internationally renowned handball director Henrik Saabye positioned the MkIIs in the upper left corner of the field to get great playing action as well as stunning emotions from that reverse angle position. The Antelope MkIIs is the latest version of LMC´s Broadcast Ultra Slow Motion based on the chipset of the Vision Research V642. It features unmatched picture quality due to proprietary OCP functions as Detail, Multi Matrix and LMC´s exclusive De-Flickering which eliminates flicker caused by artificial light situations.

Pablo Rio Set to Provide 4K 60p Color and Finishing at FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil
The Quantel GE2 system, which includes two Pablo Rio 4K color correction and finishing systems sharing storage and workflow via a GenePool, will be used for the production of fast-turnaround 4K highlights packages. These will be distributed to broadcasters and Sony Stores worldwide as well as being displayed on 4K super-screens in fan parks around Brazil. The Quantel system will also be used for the post production of the Official FIFA World Cup™ film in 4K Ultra HD.

Elemental Powers Kansai TV Over-the-Air ISDB-T Broadcast in 4K/HEVC
Kansai TV, a leading commercial broadcaster in Osaka, has used Elemental video processing to encode 4K content in high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) for terrestrial broadcast delivery over ISDB-T to an Ultra HD TV. The off-air demonstration took place during a 4K educational event hosted by Kansai TV and system integrator CTCSP. “With World Cup 2014 around the corner, pressure is intensifying to realize successful 4K OTA broadcasts,” said Keith Wymbs, chief marketing officer for Elemental. “We are thrilled that media leaders such as Kansai TV are using Elemental video processing to tap into the high quality of 4K to bring sports fans’ experiences to a whole new level.”
