IBC celebrates young talent in the industry
The media, entertainment and technology industry is changing. Attitudes are shifting, the next generation is consuming content differently to any before them and diverse and exciting content is being created to meet that demand in innovative formats. Driving this change is a new wave of industry talent, honoured at IBC with the first IBC Young Pioneer Award.
Recognising the brightest, newest talent in the industry, this award will go to someone who has made a real impact with their passion, ambition and commitment and is making an outstanding contribution to our industry.
“What we were looking for in the shortlist was, most importantly, real talent, a stand-out individual making a real difference in the industry,” said David Levine, VP, Programming - Kids, Europe & Africa/UK & Ireland, The Walt Disney Co. Ltd and Chair of the Judging Panel. “But we were also looking for a lasting legacy, for the Young Pioneer to be a leader today and a media guru of the future.”

China’s CCTV Continues Rapid Advance of IP Broadcasting with Lawo
Begun in July 2018 with installation work starting in November, the project is now complete and marks the second of CCTV’s studios to be upgraded to 4K/UHD with IP technology. The mc²96 and two further Lawo mc² series consoles in No.8 Studio (aka the 800m² studio) follows three prior AoIP projects for China’s national state broadcaster undertaken by Lawo, perfectly demonstrating that the German technical pioneer’s AoIP solutions are proven, safe and stable on the most high-profile of international broadcasters’ stages. “The renovation of CCTV’s 800m² Studio audio system was handled by our long-term partner NDT, and finished mid-Jan 2019,” says Lawo System Engineer Sam Zhang. “As soon as it was finished, it was given a major mission – broadcasting the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, which is the largest live show on Chinese New Year’s Eve, with 1.3 billion watching. The 800m² Studio produced the 4K/UHD signal; the first time the Spring Festival Gala has been broadcast in 4K. The new system did the job perfectly.”

AJA Gear Greases the Wheels at Janta TV
Janta chose to use AJA gear after carefully evaluating its options because of the solid performance and high-quality output it showed during tests. “Making AJA gear the backbone of our news channel has been one of our best decisions yet. It’s been so stable, easy to use and saves us a lot of time, especially because with LAN interfaces on most products, and built in webservers, you can easily configure and control your devices through a web browser on any platform from just about anywhere,” shared Deepak Sengupta, Group Technical Head, Janta TV. Both the satellite and social feeds are powered by a three-camera studio setup including chroma screens and a Real Set Recording Studio with fixed backgrounds. Camera signals are first fed through an AJA KUMO 3232 router in an on-site production control room (PCR).
SPORT EVENTS
The China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) trust in Silvus wireless communication technology for improved camera coverage
During the recent races of the CTCC, held in Shanghai, China, production company Top Cool Productions deployed technology for wireless mesh networks from Silvus, implemented and maintained by system integrator Broadcast Solutions. The German system integrator was on site with their Singapore entity and held responsible for the system’s design, implementation and service on-site to give the production company a broader and uninterrupted wireless camera coverage, specifically in the PIT area. Three sets of Silvus 4200 radios with Haivision Makito X encoders/decoders using HEVC (high-efficiency video coding) and SRT (secure reliable transport) were deployed. The solution from both companies provided a combination of a wireless IP MESH-network and a highly efficient low latency encoding/decoding system. The team-play of Silvus and Haivision solutions are the perfect combination to provide a low-latency wireless camera system for broadcast and live TV-production.

Steve Stemac lights metal rockers Lamb of God with Elation
Stemac started with Lamb of God in May, 2018, as lighting director, inheriting a stage set-up designed by tour manager Brian Griffin. After earning the band’s, and Griffin’s, trust over the following legs of the tour, the designer began to evolve the show, a process that eventually led to fixture changes. For the latest leg, a 16-date trek across the southern U.S. states and up the east coast, Stemac chose to reinforce the band’s signature sound and stage presence using Elation DARTZ 360™ LED beam/spot fixtures and Elation ACL 360 Bars™.“Lamb of God likes a lot of backlighting with not too many revealing hues,” Stemac says of the type of lighting required for the Grammy-nominated veteran rockers. After respecting their parameters, he says he simply approached it as a fan, asking himself, “What do I think would look right for this song?”
