Entertainment Technology @ 2018
A Foundation for Immersive Entertainment
The ongoing expansion of “immersive” or “inclusive” entertainment of various types marks one of the more unusual game-changing technology trends the entertainment industry has seen in recent years. That’s because the trend appears to be running on multiple tracks, all with enormous potential. The use of new tools to create virtual reality (VR), extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and hyper-reality experiences, along with new forms of immersive theater and a few other things along the way, appears to be important both regarding the challenge of how to transform that content into meaningful consumer entertainment experiences on the one hand, and for the significance of the tools used to make the content to begin with. Both tracks appear to be growing in importance for studios seeking to create new kinds of entertainment and new ways to produce traditional forms of entertainment. As a consequence, although it is still early, and much is still unknown about how such content and tools will change the media landscape, major studios are ratcheting up infrastructures designed to make sense of it all in a healthy experimental way.

France Galop chooses Sony IP Live for new Longchamp Racecourse control room
“From a global perspective, since the installation of IP based production, we have been able to use fibre cabling for transporting video signals without the need for a huge HD-SDI gate and to eliminate HD-SDI/fibre optic conversion. The goal was to be able to offer a set of future-oriented IP solutions, especially for audio, intercom, KVM and video," says Kevin Bonnaud, Project Manager at MTCE Consulting. “Before we chose the solution for the racecourse, we had made a comprehensive study of the technical and financial offers on the market, a key factor was also our visit to both the BBC Studioworks’ installation of IP and Sony’s IP set-up, located at Pinewood Studios,” adds Kevin Bonnaud.

Czech pilot Sonka takes back-to-back wins with Kazan triumph
The 2017 overall runner-up Sonka came into Kazan on a high after claiming his first race win of the 2018 season in Budapest, yet struggled to find the best lines in the Russian racetrack and finished 12th in Qualifying. But in Sunday’s race the Czech star was on rails, clocking the fastest time in the opening Round of 14 and doing the same in the Round of 8. The Final 4 piled on the pressure, as Chambliss and Goulian – who were first and third in Kazan in 2017 – as well as Spain’s Juan Velarde all logged times under 53 seconds. It was all up to Sonka, and split times were neck-and-neck, but in the end Sonka pulled off 52.123s, outpacing Goulian by just 0.115s for the win and a jump up the overall leaderboard.

P!NK Swings Into Action With Sennheiser Digital 6000
Sennheiser has a long association with P!NK through her RF coordinator and monitor engineer for the band, Horst Hartmann. For her 2013 The Truth About Love Tour, he specified an integrated in-ear monitor and microphone system to help facilitate her technically and physically challenging show. “As well as the challenge of the range of motion, we needed to provide P!NK with a headset that could also work in front of the PA because she is often flying above the audience and through the whole room,” Hartmann stated at the time. “Additionally, the microphone had to sound as good as a hand-held one and had to be extremely resistant to feedback, like a hand-held would be.”
