NUSSLI Builds Interim Stadium for Fortuna Düsseldorf

A fully operational interim stadium in compliance with the regulations of DFB and DFL

NUSSLI, a global supplier of modular stadiums, was commissioned this week by the city of Düsseldorf with the construction of an interim stadium for the second-division soccer team Fortuna Düsseldorf. NUSSLI will erect the temporary stadium next to the ESPRIT arena in eight weeks building time. The last home games of the season will be played in the stadium, which can hold about 20,000 spectators.

Fortuna Düsseldorf, the second-division team of the National Soccer League, will move to a temporary stadium to play its last three home games in this season. Due to the scheduled Eurovision Song Contest, the soccer games could not be played in the ESPRIT arena, the soccer club's home stadium. NUSSLI was commissioned with the construction of the interim stadium for Fortuna on January 11th. The stadium contractor signed a contract with the city of Düsseldorf for the construction of a fully operational interim stadium in compliance with the regulations of the German Soccer Association (DFB) and the German Soccer League (DFL). The construction of the stadium, with a capacity for approximately 20,000 fans, will begin on January 17th. Building completion is scheduled for March 15th. The city of Düsseldorf has chosen NUSSLI as their partner, as a result of the company's international experience in stadium construction and in event and exhibition construction.

The stadium's total approximate spectator capacity of 20,000 is divided into seating for about 12,500 fans and standing room for an additional 7,500. The functional rooms for the teams will be set up in fully equipped containers located behind the main grandstand. NUSSLI will recruit a crew of around 40 to build the grandstand facilities. The stadium in the sports park arena will be implemented by NUSSLI as a modularly built temporary stadium, who will also rent out the material used for the duration of its use. When the ESPRIT arena is available again to Fortuna Düsseldorf, the interim stadium built by NUSSLI will be deconstructed. The material will find subsequent use in future projects.

NUSSLI realized a similar project last year in Vancouver. There, the company built an interim stadium for the BC Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps for use during renovation works on their home stadium BC Place. The temporary Empire Fields Stadium in Vancouver has a capacity for 27,500 spectators and is a milestone in the history of temporary construction in North America.
