MEDIAPRO and Johan Cruyff Institute promote training for professionals in eSports management with their first massive online course
According to consultancy firm Newzoo, the global audience for eSports will reach 495 million followers worldwide this year, between occasional and faithful audiences. For 2023, the forecasts are to reach 646 million, with annual growth of around 10%. In terms of business volume, the eSports industry will generate turnover of $1.1 billion, 10.6% more than the previous year, according to the consultancy firm. In addition, Strock Consulting report that eSports in Spain are currently ranked in eighth place in sports ranking by number of contracts with sponsors (as opposed to turnover).
These figures demonstrate the importance of a booming sector which, despite these numbers, is still very much in the development stage and presents countless business opportunities. In this sense, MEDIAPRO and the Johan Cruyff Institute have joined forces to promote training in the field of eSports management. The agreement will see MEDIAPRO contribute its leadership position in the eSports sector with projects like LVP (the largest Spanish-language eSports organization in the world) and UBEAT (OTT and television channel featuring sector-specific content), while the Johan Cruyff Institute will provide their know-how and experience in sports management training.
The ground-breaking project resulting from this collaboration is the massive open online course (MOOC) "The eSports Industry", available in Spanish and English and already open for registration. With a maximum duration of four weeks, the course explains the evolution of the eSports industry through major players and stakeholders of the sector, with videos, podcasts, interviews, reports, and articles. Registrants will learn all about what eSports are; how this industry and video games work; the legal framework; opportunities the sector offers; its economic impact; who the key players are and what roles they play; as well as the culture, values and aspirations of the professionals involved.
"eSports are one of the mainstays of the Mediapro Group and as such, we know full well that agreements with institutions such as the Johan Cruyff Institute are vital to continue helping this sector grow and preparing the professionals who will lead it in the future on an international scale", said María Carmen Fernández, director of Innovation and New Business at the Mediapro Group.
Mariël Koerhuis, General Manager of the Johan Cruyff Institute added, "Our institution has always been at the forefront of educational innovation and we have been following developments in the eSports industry closely. This collaboration with the Mediapro Group paves the way for us to co-create new experiences from the very core of this challenging and exciting industry.”
In the words of Víctor Jordán, Academic Director at the Johan Cruyff Institute, “the objective of the program is to understand where a young industry like eSports stands today and in which direction it is heading. For this, we have prepared a series of challenges that will allow students to discover and connect with a knowledge base, individuals and institutions in the sector”.
“At LVP we have been spearheading the development of the eSports sector in Spain and Latin America for over a decade. We’ve poured all our know-how into this course to ensure that "The eSports Industry" becomes the definitive training tool.", said Jordi Soler, CEO of LVP.
