Challenge Mastered: South American Games Opened with grandMA2

.

The South American Games (a.k.a. ODESUR Games or Juegos Sudamericanos) are a regional multi-sport event featuring competitors from across South America and organised by the South American Sports Organization. Starting 1978 in La Paz, Bolivia the event is staged every four years, and the last edition was in Santiago, Chile. The Games have featured an equivalent to the Olympic Flame since their inception: the South American Flame, which is relayed from Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, to the host city.

Lighting designer Luis Pastor is known to be a big MA fan. Therefore it was no wonder that he used 2 x grandMA2 full-sizes, 1 x grandMA2 light and 4 x MA NPU (Network Processing Units) for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 South American Games. “It was an extremely important event for Chile its government”, narrated Pastor, “The challenge was tremendous as the setup had to be completed in less than a week. Also we had only one rehearsal day! This meant that we had to pre-programme everything. The only night available for rehearsals was needed to adjust the TV lighting, everything else had to be done in advance.”

Continued Pastor: “The lighting was 100 percent coordinated with the video elements, from colour changes with delays following the images right up to the most complex of bitmap effects. The grandMA2 again performed perfectly and provided us with a very safe and stable control system and the possibility of covering the whole space thanks to the MA NPU.”

Around 400 moving lights from Clay Paky, Martin, Philips Vari*Lite and Robe as well as multiple LED fixtures were used. Frank Janssens worked as the assistant lighting designer and Paulo Lebrão as programmer. The lighting crew chief was Juan Pablo Muñoz.

Orbita Produciones delivered the lighting equipment.

The 2014 South American Games was a multi-sport event that took place in Santiago, Chile. It was the 10th edition of the ODESUR South American Games. Santiago hosted this event for the second time, the first being in 1986. Most of the events took place in and around the National Stadium. The games were held held between March 7 to 18.
