Ultimate Fighting Championship

Just when you thought that the U.A.E. had exhausted its list of firsts, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (U.F.C.) landed in the Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi, the first time in this region. Usually an indoor event, this was also the first time the UFC, comprising some of the world’s greatest mixed martial artists, was held in an outdoor arena.

Held at the Concert Arena of Ferrari World in the area adjoining Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, the event was organised by Think Flash Entertainment.

Creative Technology Dubai, continuing its ongoing relationship with Think Flash and Lee Charteris, Operations Director at Flash, was contracted to supply the video requirements for this event.

Creative Technology Dubai, supplied four 6.10m x 4.57m (6 x 6 panel) Lighthouse R7 LED screens and an equal number of 6m x 3.37m rear projection screens with Christie HD18 projectors to enhance the spectators’ experience. All signal was transmitted by the broadcaster and Creative Technology then distributed it via fibre, SD/SDI to the four LED screens and HD/SDI to all the Christie HD Projectors.

Three matches were fought at the Concert Arena with the main event seeing middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva fighting against Ju jitsu master Demian Maia for the middleweight belt.

With the region having a long tradition of mixed martial arts, the country’s passion for the sport enabled Abu Dhabi to present a most successful event. The UFC was televised live to an estimated half million homes around the world.
