WAPA TV Upgrades Grass Valley Ignite Solution for Improved Production Workflow

WAPA TV Upgrades Grass Valley Ignite Solution for Improved Production Workflow and Viewer Experience

Ignite Automated Production, in combination with the GV Karrera K-Frame S-series, allows for streamlined control room operation and decreased operating expense

For WAPA TV, a television station based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, an upgrade to its existing Ignite solution was not about adding more bells and whistles to its control room, but about simplifying production for an improved workflow and better viewer experience for live events and breaking news. The latest Ignite Konnect platform from Grass Valley, a Belden Brand, includes new, innovative features, which deliver easier, more streamlined operations. For full integration with its latest Ignite system, WAPA TV also invested in the Karrera K-Frame S-series Video Production Center system, as well as the RS-LDX C80 Elite robotic camera solutions.

Before anything else, news production starts with image capture, wherever and whenever breaking news takes place. Now, WAPA TV can make full use of the powerful features of the LDX Compact Series through RS-LDX integrated robotic cameras. The cameras enable complete customization in one easy-to-use package, right out of the box, with BT.2020 wide color gamut support, as well as optional native HDR support using SMPTE ST 2084 and HLG.

While the RS-LDX captures community news and events in the field, Ignite Konnect, with full integration of Karrera switchers with Ignite Production Automation, allows a single operator to manage control room devices used to produce live newscasts and event programming. The Karrera K-Frame S-series offers multiformat support including 1080p and 4K UHD and a full range of features in a compact 6 RU video frame, with 3 M/Es or 2 M/Es and up to 80 inputs and 48 outputs. In combination with Ignite, the system is designed as the industry's first and most complete link between the control room and the newsroom, making it possible to control on-air timing, accommodate last-minute show changes and direct any type of production on the fly. To further ease the pressure of breaking news production, the production automation platform also gives operators visibility to filter changes that occur during live productions and condenses and simplifies the event library.

For an additional powerful switcher option, WAPA TV also purchased a GV Korona K-Frame S-series Video Production Center which combines ultimate mid-range switcher performance with proven workflows for simplified control of complex productions. The system, available in 1, 2 or 3 M/Es, offers a choice between three control surfaces with a built-in touchscreen menu system, innovative touchscreens in transition areas, and a K-Frame S-series video processing engine.

“WAPA TV couldn’t compromise quality solutions for simplified production but needed a way to better utilize both its equipment and its broadcast team,” said Nahuel Villegas, vice president, Caribbean And Latin America, Grass Valley. “Less truly was more in this case, and with an upgraded Ignite system, WAPA TV got more features with less complexity, less space, less time and less money, which will ultimately translate to more programming and more satisfied viewers.”
