Room Enhancement System with Directional Sound Reinforcement

At this year’s Tonmeistertagung, the MEDIAGROUP presented the latest version of their VIVACE system. VIVACE creates virtual acoustics in indoor and even outdoor performance spaces and is used typically to improve the acoustic features of environments that are too small or insufficiently reverberant. At the Tonmeistertagung, two new functions were introduced which use the system infrastructure for creative purposes in addition to the core task.

Directional Sound Reinforcement

VIVACE’s new direct matrix makes it possible to route each input signal with separate gain and delay settings to any speaker path – that is, individual settings are available for each cross point. If this functionality is used for fixed stage microphones it enables straightforward directional sound reinforcement by ensuring that the first wave arrives from the appropriate direction. Even for moving sources accurate directional information can be obtained. In this case the movements of an actor on stage are tracked either manually or perhaps by an automatic tracking system. Depending on the actor’s position, VIVACE’s direct matrix will route his or her radio-mic signal with appropriate level settings to the various speakers.The first deployment of this new functionality took place at the Oberammergau Passion Play 2010. The engineer used a remote-control system to track the actors’ movements on stage.

Effect Feeds

The VIVACE version displayed at the Tonmeistertagung offered comprehensive features for 3-D signal routing. The system moves sources and effects freely in 3-D space – even within the virtually enhanced acoustic environment. Furthermore, the acoustic dimensions of a source become variable, giving an impression of the fourth dimension: the distance to the listener. This distance can be adjusted using the reverb level, which is can be varied freely and individually for each source. Effect changes can be cued on a time-line when linked to a player’s time code output. Unlike effect processors used for reverberating voices and instruments, VIVACE outputs direct and reverb signal components from directions computed precisely rather than just from the main speakers. Therefore, the calculated reflections come from exactly the same direction as they would in the corresponding real acoustic environment.

VIVACE is a state-of-the-art electronic room-acoustics emulation system which creates highly convincing spatial acoustic environments in any indoor and even outdoor environment. Once installed, VIVACE creates acoustics in a virtual and therefore highly variable way, which could not be achieved using conventional physical acoustics modifiers.

A VIVACE system consists of a few microphones picking up the performance on the stage, the room-enhancement mainframe, an audio I/O matrix system, multichannel digital amplifiers, monitored remotely, and loudspeakers. VIVACE digitizes, analyses, and processes incoming stage-microphone signals in real-time with extreme precision and a dynamic range of over 150 dB and subsequently plays them back over precisely positioned speakers.

Using an intelligent convolution algorithm VIVACE can recreate almost any environment in a low-reverberant space. VIVACE also enables sources and effects to be moved around, virtually, in the acoustic environment.In addition to standalone units, VIVACE is also available as an integrated solution for AURUS and NEXUS systems. This enables the live engineer to adjust the acoustics program directly from the desk.

All essential components of the system are built with full redundancy and automatic change-over. This begins with the VIVACE mainframe itself which works internally with two processors operated in parallel and monitored by watchdogs. The signal processor is connected to the Audio I/O system with fully redundant fibre-optic cabling.VIVACE ensures a high degree of detail veracity, perfect transient response, and exceptional feedback stability. The result is a homogeneous and entirely realistic three-dimensional sound which meets individual on-site acoustic requirements with the utmost flexibility and accuracy.
