Ravensbourne Graduate Show Supported by AXON’s Synapse

Ravensbourne student logs onto the Axon system in CAR to set up an audio downmix for the SD transmission path

June is a very busy time for students studying on the broadcast engineering course at Ravensbourne college in London. It is the time when they prepare for the televising of the colleges graduate show. The annual show is the opportunity for students to showcase their talents from Fashion Design, Architecture, Product Design to Broadcast Engineering.

This year it has fallen to the broadcasting students to set up a master control and flyway installation which will broadcast the event over two days to a local 5Watt transmitter, the internet and the local DTTV mux to be viewed live.

The production begins with the recording of the fashion show which will become a pre-recorded insert into the live transmission, with students manning everything from jib cameras to production sound consoles to produce the 5.1 audio mix of the event. With two roving radio cameras and a multi camera presentation area this event is as complex as any Outside Broadcast.

Naturally an event of this scale requires a great deal of equipment to make it possible, in particular a large amount of infrastructure is needed to produce the audio down mixes and both HD and SD feeds for Tx and monitoring.

In order to meet the need for extra equipment the college relies on Broadcast manufacturers and hire companies to offer assistance and this year Axon Digital Design once again stepped forward by providing 4 frames of processing equipment to the students to build the infrastructure required for the event.
