Petrol Protection Crucial to Israeli TV Shoot

Terkel, a noted documentarian who shoots current affairs programs as well as extreme sports, has used Petrol’s covers

Petrol, a Vitec Group brand, announces that Israeli cinematographer Amir Terkel has chosen Petrol Bags Deca Raincover to protect his equipment while shooting a car show for Israeli TV. For this particular episode, he needed extra protection for his equipment, as he was shooting off-road 4x4s as they raced through mud and rain.

“I’ve been using Petrol’s rain covers with my Sony EX1 and Sony Z7 for a while,” Terkel says. “Recently, we found ourselves shooting for about eight hours under sometimes heavy rain in a dirty swamp. We were often splashed by mud as the cars crossed streams and navigated through muddy forests.

“We simply could not have achieved the shots we did without the Deca Raincovers,” he adds. “The hot-shoe mount is what makes this rain cover the most practical. The mount raises it a few inches above the camera and creates a rigid ‘canopy’, allowing unbstructed movement of the hands on the camera controls. Because this ‘canopy’ sits on a hot shoe rail, you can adjust it either forward or backward, so it will not protrude over the lens.

“Not only did I have clear access to camera controls with both hands, it also allowed me easy access to connect or disconnect the XLR cables as well as the camera’s internal microphone switches. The ability to stay connected to my sound person in the rain was a blessing.”

Terkel notes that he could protect the lens when necessary by turning the camera sideways. Water and mud would drip down because the cover zips below the camera. “And the clear plastic panels on the side allowed me to see the camera controls with ease,” he adds.

Terkel, a noted documentarian who also shoots current affairs programs as well as extreme sports, has used Petrol’s covers in other difficult conditions. “The raincovers recently helped me get great footage when I was shooting in dusty conditions in the desert,” he recalls. “We worked off the back of an open truck on dirt roads. The hook and loop strap that fits underneath the lens as well as the zipper in the back effectively sealed the camera from the dirt and dusty conditions on this shoot.”
