Māori Television Service Adds Grass Valley Routing Switcher

MTS has also just recently (May 2012) implemented a Grass Valley STRATUS™ Media Workflow Application Framework platform for all its News and Current Affairs programming. The system is running on its Grass Valley K2 Summit™ and K2 Dyno™ media server network. The GV STRATUS platform is a practical solution to a broadcast service oriented architecture, providing easy plug-in interfacing to a broad range of Grass Valley and third-party equipment to create end-to-end workflows.
Replacing its aging central routing switcher with the Trinix NXT without impairing on-air and in-house operational performance was a challenge for MTS. To solve this problem, Grass Valley and MTS designed a parallel installation in the equipment room and a concurrent training program with the Grass Valley router seeing the same sources and destinations as the legacy routing switcher. When the time was right, MTS easily switched-over from its legacy central routing switcher to the 256x512 HD Trinix NXT, under the control of a redundant Grass Valley Jupiter™ routing control system.

“Our old routing switcher had come to the end of its working life, but replacing something so central to every single technical operation is a huge challenge,” said Barry Russ, GM of Operations at MTS. “We are very familiar with the people and products of Grass Valley, and together we developed an installation, commissioning, and training program which gave us great confidence. While the Trinix NXT is a great product on its own, we also looked at the replacement with the view to excellent integration into our future STRATUS workflow platform. We also respect the local support that Grass Valley provides for us in New Zealand.
“The central routing switcher is a hugely important choice for a broadcaster,” said Andrew Sedek, Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific at Grass Valley. “Every signal in the building passes through it, so absolute reliability is critical, along with ease of control so that, whether the routing path is set up by an operator or by a workflow management application, it is switched cleanly every time. The Trinix NXT is designed to provide comprehensive switching capabilities in an incredibly reliable and robust device, which easily integrates into automated workflows and SOAs.”
