Hitachi Showcases Latest Advances in Digital OB, Camera, Microwave Link and Transmitter Technology at Broadcast Asia

At Broadcast Asia 2016, Hitachi Kokusai Electric (stand 1K2-01) will showcase the company’s latest advances in Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) Outside Broadcast (OB) vehicles. On show for the first time in Asia, the new Hitachi DSNG OB truck offers new levels of operational flexibility, cost-efficiency and technical performance right up to 4K ultra-HDTV capabilities.

Also at Broadcast Asia, Hitachi Kokusai Electric and its subsidiary companies will showcase a range of its most advanced broadcast system cameras including the SK-HD1300 3MOS sensor HD production camera. A key camera on display is the SK-UHD4000 4K Ultra-HDTV broadcast camera system, which offers the market’s most elegant 4K UHD upgrade pathway since it can use the 2/3-inch B4 mount lenses found in conventional HD broadcast cameras. This enables broadcasters to use their existing lenses and shoot video in 4K resolution, while at the same time retaining the easy handling and operability of broadcast cameras currently in use.

The SK-UHD4000 is equipped with a 2/3-inch MOS sensor, which enables high sensitivity and resolution video images whilst significantly reducing power consumption.

Versatile DSNG OB truck
Newly developed at Hitachi’s Istanbul-based design and engineering facility, its compact and agile DSNG truck harnesses the latest advances in digital satellite transmitter technology to provide some of the market’s most advanced OB facilities.

Based on a Mercedes Vario vehicle, the truck can support up to six fiber, wireless system and PTZ cameras. Powerful communication capabilities are provided through a 150cm satellite antenna and a 15m heavy duty mast. The vehicle houses over 1KM of cable on motorised drums meaning that a network of remote cameras can be supported by the truck.

The vehicle provides 220RU of rack space and each truck is specified, designed and manufactured at Hitachi’s Istanbul facility to meet the customer’s OB needs. The unit provides all of the video, audio, transmission and infrastructure capabilities needed to create a stand-alone outside broadcast facility. The technical specification of the unit is such that it will support any broadcast signal from serial digital to HD and even 4K.

Building on its extensive OB vehicle design heritage, Hitachi has ensured that operational staff of six will feel at home whilst working in the truck. Attention has been paid to the facility’s internal design, monitor and control systems, air conditioning and weather proofing in order to create a comfortable working space irrespective of external environmental conditions. An on-board power generator ensures that the truck can operate anywhere, irrespective of power supply issues.

Portable digital Microwave link
Another product being exhibited at Broadcast Asia is Hitachi's Z100 series of portable digital microwave link systems that are designed to facilitate support coverage of temporary OB venues. High Definition and Standard Definition video and audio can easily be transmitted digitally from the field to a TV station, production site or central receive point during events.

The full-featured Hitachi Z100 Digital Microwave Link can transmit HD/SD-SDI, VBS (NTSC or PAL) video signals with the use of a new-design built-in HD/SD CODEC. Analogue signals are digitized into a transport stream and transmitted through the DVB-ASI interface.

Compact powerful transmitters
Completing the Hitachi technology showcase at Broadcast Asia are two state-of-the-art transmitters. The Parallax is the market’s highest power solid state UHF DTV transmitter, providing up to 100KW TPO ATSC. The transmitter features wideband Doherty technology, ensuring ultra-high efficiency, while hot-swap AC / DC rectifiers enable >90 percent efficiency.

Supporting low / medium power DTV transmitter applications, Hitachi’s E-Compact provides industry leading efficiency in this class. ISDB / DVB-T / T2 mode supports 600W – 7.0KW applications whilst ATSC mode supports 700W – 8.5KW applications. Furthermore, advanced Digital Adaptive Pre-correction (DAP) helps streamline RF performance.

“At Broadcast Asia, we will demonstrate a range of OB, broadcast system camera, digital link and compact transmitter technologies which combine to provide market leading technical performance with significant operating efficiency,” commented Hiroshi Mano from Hitachi Kokusai Electric Asia (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.  “From studio productions, right through to sports and other live events we have developed solutions that combine the highest broadcast quality with real operational cost savings. We look forward to a very busy show.”
