Harris Announces Latest Enhancements to its Fiber Optic Solutions Portfolio

Harris OPTO+

Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announces the latest enhancements to its OPTO+™ fiber optic product portfolio. These enhancements illustrate the company's commitment to supporting broadcasters — as well as satellite/cable facilities, telecommunications companies and outside/truck-based broadcasting — as they take advantage of fiber optics to efficiently manage signal transport and look for better ways to streamline their workflows.

Providing Highest-Density Signal Transport in the Industry

Harris® OPTO+ products provide the highest-density signal transport over fiber in the market. The new Harris OP+TDMT/R+8 products are capable of transporting up to four 3 Gb/s, eight HD-SDI or eight SD/ASI signals, or any combination equal to 12 Gb/s of transport signals, over a single optical fiber. This 3DTV-capable solution allows for up to 24 independent 3 Gb/s or 48 independent HD/SD/ASI signals in a single 2RU frame. Harris offers a wide range of 3 Gb/s and 3DTV-ready fiber optic modules that can be upgraded from SD to HD to 3 Gb/s through a simple software key.

For optimal expandability at an affordable price, multiplexing technologies — TDM (time division multiplexing), CWDM (coarse wavelength division multiplexing) and DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) — are implemented across the Harris fiber optic portfolio. Using CWDM or DWDM, several signals can be combined into single wavelengths, providing a cost-effective and expandable design.

Harris fiber optic solutions address a range of applications — from simple E-O/O-E (electrical-to-optical/optical-to-electrical) functions to high-capacity transport solutions (up to 320 HD channels per fiber) to SONET/SDH (synchronous optical networking/ synchronous digital hierarchy) fiber carrier networks. Fiber optic interfaces are now available across the company's signal processing, routing, distribution and test and measurement products (including handheld optical test instruments).

Fiber optic signal transport also can provide enhanced reliability during mission-critical events such as live sports transmission and outside broadcasting. Harris offers a wide range of modular optical solutions that are ideal for sports venues and mobile units, including the new OPT+VTX module, a bidirectional video and audio transceiver solution that provides support for serial, GPI/O and Ethernet communication.

Harris fiber optic customers benefit from advanced monitoring and control capabilities via the Harris CCS Navigator™ application and Q-SEE™ monitoring technology, as well as through industry-standard protocols such as SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol).

"The Harris fiber optic portfolio includes solutions for every signal type and is ideal for customers designing a new facility from the ground up or for those with more complex requirements beyond electrical," said Harris Morris, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. "Harris continues to integrate optical interfaces across its portfolio, and the result is a wide range of cost-effective, space- and energy-saving solutions to meet any signal transport application."

Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks. The Harris ONE™ solution brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that enable advanced media workflows for emerging content delivery business models.
