Grass Valley K2 Dyno Director brings added power and flexibility to Live HD replay production

Grass Valley™ announced the K2 Dyno™ Director, a new software management layer that extends the capabilities of the K2 product line while enabling live event productions to cost-effectively combine multiple Grass Valley K2 Dyno™ HD replay controllers for use within OB vans and sports venues. The architecture is completely scalable to accommodate virtually any number of replay channels and/or camera inputs, all tied to a centralized point of production on-site.

K2 Dyno Director software

The multi-layered K2 Dyno Director software features a comprehensive toolkit and user workspaces for enhancing live event productions and runs on a basic IT server connected to a standard Gigabit Ethernet control network. The Grass Valley K2 Dyno Director is a server/client application that can be set up with a number of optional components, such as a special K2 Dyno controller, multiviewers, touchscreen monitors, as well as Grass Valley’s Kayak™, Kalypso™ and the new Kayenne™ production switchers. In addition, popular edit systems such as Final Cut Pro, as well as Grass Valley EDIUS® and Aurora™ HD platforms can be configured to directly edit in place while adding files to a playlist on a Grass Valley K2 Summit production client server. “Viewers have certain expectations about live event coverage, so program directors need a solution that can create repeatable and sophisticated replays, while producers need a way to cost-effectively enhance their productions and expand their projects without a major investment,” said Jeff Rosica, Senior Vice President of Grass Valley. All of those requirements are met with the K2 Dyno Director.” The highly intuitive, yet affordable K2 Dyno Director software also allows fewer people to perform all the required replay tasks usually requiring many more people when using conventional replay systems, while providing a new level of system functionality for both large and small productions. Because the K2 platform provides file wrapping of MXF and MOV files, the content can easily be shared with edit and archive systems, with no special equipment or processes necessary. Users of the K2 Dyno Director can set up rules to automatically move content to locations for editors to use even while a live production is in process.

Multiple Task-Specific Layers for Efficiency

There are three primary aspects to the software, allowing customers to purchase only the module needed to support a specific task. First, there is content management for live production that aggregates and distributes metadata, highlights, and playlists. Then there’s replay management for production environments that collates and controls the outputs of multiple K2 Dyno replay controllers to air. Finally, comprehensive live production with integrated switcher control is included for fixed and mobile live event facilities.

Content Management is Easy

A key element of the K2 Dyno Director software is providing content management capabilities when preparing for an event, replaying during an event, and packaging after an event. Utilizing the standard networking capabilities of a K2 media server, K2 Dyno Director can enable a single operator to view all assets across distributed K2 Dyno Replay Systems. Media can be browsed, transferred, and trimmed. Users can ingest, manage, tag, append, and collate media for ease of use and greater efficiencies. While the operator is performing a replay role, the application can execute rules for metadata association and perform content management tasks. Users can aggregate and create highlights and playlists from one workspace for playout, having access to media across the replay network.

Playout Performance

The other primary component of the K2 Dyno Director is to provide instant replay highlight package sequencing for playout. An operator can review, sequence, and playout highlight packages from one K2 Dyno Director workstation. The replay director can then review captured camera angles from multiple K2 Dyno systems. Control of K2 Dyno channels is temporarily routed to the director, freeing replay operators to work on finding addition angles, trimming clips, and adding metadata. This playout management can be done with any combination of control panel and touch-screen panels.
