Funky Junk Offers Its Customers Limited Edition Royer Mics

Only 200 of these special, platinum plated Royer R-121 ribbon microphones are available world-wide

To mark its success at the 2013 Technical Grammys, Royer Labs has created a limited edition version of its Award winning R-121 ribbon microphone.

This special microphone is plated in pure platinum to mirror the finish on the Technical Grammy. Each microphone comes with a certificate of authenticity personally signed by David Royer and a pair of white cotton handling gloves to ensure it stays in pristine condition.

Royer Lab's UK distributor Funky Junk anticipates plenty of interest in these limited edition models and has earmarked a number of them for UK customers. In total, Royer has sold 65 units so far.

"With only 200 available world-wide, these microphones are destined to become collectors’ items," says Mark Thompson, Managing Director of Funky Junk. "Even without the platinum plating, Royer R-121 microphones are a fantastic purchase as many of our artist, producer and engineer customers will testify. They are small, lightweight and durable – and they sound fantastic."

As the US Recording Academy noted when awarding Royer their 2013 Technical Grammy, "Royer Labs single-handedly brought ribbon microphones into mainstream recording". Popular during the early part of the 20th century, ribbon mics eventually fell out of favour because they were so heavy to use and so delicate. However Royer’s technology changed all that by introducing microphones that were smaller, very tough and useable. The Academy went on to say "The company's ribbon technology is extremely natural sounding and brings a more realistic analog sound and feel to digital recordings and live sound reproduction".

John Jennings, VP of Sales and Marketing at Royer Labs, says: "When David showed us his original R-121 design in 1997, we knew it was a game changer. Being honoured with a Technical Grammy 16 years later is a fantastic achievement and everyone at Royer Labs is incredibly proud to be part of this winning story. Every Royer microphone is hand-made in the USA by craftsmen who are fanatical about building the best ribbon microphones in the world, and the R-121 Platinum is the limited edition mic that we celebrate our Technical Grammy achievement with!”
