Digitale Cinematographie 2012: The 10th Anniversary

Digitale Cinematographie's successful concept will inspire visitors in 2012 with its exhibitions, workshops and screenings

The former Congress Hall on the Theresienwiese will host the 10th “Digitale Cinematographie” on July 5 and 6 this year. The anniversary will be duly celebrated at the event being held at the same time as the Filmfest München.

Ten years ago, when the "Digitale Cinematographie" was launched by its founders Gerhard Baier, Martin Ludwig (Ludwig Kameraverleih) and Martin Kreitl (MKMedia Production), the idea of "digital acquisition" in film was not only a pie in the sky, it was frowned upon.

Today, the three men have every reason to celebrate because their vision has become reality. The fact is that analogue film productions have become a rarity. Most cameras being sold these days are digital and have a "35mm size" sensor and image resolution up to native 4K. Albeit with a bitter aftertaste, the strategic bankruptcy of Kodak as a pioneer of film and photo appears to manifest this development.

And innovation in the digital realm is far from over. Because in film is not just about low costs, saving time and technical feasibility. As always - nothing has changed - filmmakers, cameramen/women and directors strive for both perfection and the aesthetics of the images. Film is and shall remain art and does not depend on highly technical, fast and inexpensive implementation. This makes artistic aesthetics one of the major challenges in digital film.

What does digital do in regard of creativity and can we live without any „analogue feeling”? These are the provocative questions “Digitale Cinemotographie” will address in its 10th anniversary year. International filmmakers and cameramen have been invited to share their expertise. In workshops and screenings they will present their ideas and visions in the interplay between digital perfection and aesthetic demands.
