Twenty Twenty Sound and Vision with Genelec

“Anyone with broadcast audio experience is familiar with Genelec,” says Daniel Jones

Vaudeville Post is a small company that offers a flexible, creative, post-production sound design service to TV production companies. Specialising in bespoke online, grading and sound dubbing setups, they have worked on many award winning and nominated productions, one of them being the widely-acclaimed ‘The Choir’ for Twenty Twenty Television, part of the Shed Media Group. Their set-up at Twenty Twenty Television – featuring Genelec active monitors - allows them to carry out technically excellent work at a cost-effective price.

With many TV companies now working on HD productions with surround sound audio, Vaudeville decided to upgrade their monitoring equipment to keep pace with market trends. Founder and MD of Vaudeville, Daniel Jones, road-tested a few monitoring options with Genelec emerging as the brand of choice:
“Anyone with broadcast audio experience is familiar with Genelec,” says Daniel Jones. “Their active monitors are, if you like, the default choice for studios across the world. We were happy with our old set up but with a need to keep pace with developments in HD and surround sound we knew we had to upgrade our system. Going through this process was a good exercise because, as a small company, every penny we spend has to be spent wisely. I’m glad to say we came to the right decision with Genelec and the great service we received from the supplier made the decision that much easier.”

Source supplied 3 x 8040A and 2 x 8020B 2-way active monitors combined with a 7000 Series subwoofer to complete the 5.1 system. The limited space at Twenty Twenty Television made the bi-amplified 8040A 2-way active monitors ideal for the project as it is designed to incorporate a wide frequency response that is suited to nearfield monitoring environments. The advanced Genelec Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™) and the rounded edges and gently curved front and sides of the MDE™ (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™) enclosure, deliver an astoundingly wide, flat frequency response both on and off axis.

The 8040A studio monitors also come with an Iso-Pod™ (Isolation Positioner/Decoupler™) which eliminates colouration of the sound by decoupling the monitor from its mounting surface. The Iso-Pod™ allows the loudspeaker to be angled so that its acoustic axis points directly at the listener. The 8040A includes integrated rear support points for floor and wall stands, with an additional M10 threaded mounting hole on the enclosure base.

The small Genelec 8020B 2-way active monitor (Height with Iso-Pod™ 242 mm, Width 151 mm and Depth 142 mm) is also designed for difficult listening environments, particularly those compromised by lack of space – as at Twenty Twenty. However, the compact size is no handicap to the performance of the 8020B two-way active monitoring system as it incorporates all of Genelec's acoustic design innovations to minimise all forms of distortion.

The 8020B has a die-cast aluminium Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE™), which features relatively large internal volumes; softly curved edges and outstanding mechanical strength. As a result, the imaging accuracy and low frequency extension with such a compact enclosure are truly astounding. The 8020B also incorporates the advanced Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW™), which provides an amazingly smooth on and off axis response; while the long, curved reflex port ends in a wide flare for excellent bass articulation.
