Powerful Surround Sound Experience at Marcus Theatres® UltraScreen® Cinemas

HARMAN’s JBL ScreenArray® Ultra High Power Loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers Bring Powerful Surround Sound Experience

Marcus Theatres, one of the top cinema chains in the United States, is dedicated to providing the ultimate cinema experience to moviegoers. The company’s patented UltraScreen® movie screen is more than three stories tall, with five times the square footage area of a typical screen. Marcus Theatres is equally committed to cinema sound, using HARMAN’s JBL ScreenArray® 5742 4-way and 5732 3-way ultra-high-power loudspeaker systems, and Crown I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers in its UltraScreen 3D and 2D theaters.

“The quality of the audio is as important as the image in providing moviegoers with a memorable cinema experience,” said Mark Collins, Director of Projection Technology for Marcus Theatres. “When customers go to the movies, they expect to be ‘wowed’ and enjoy powerful, immersive sound they can’t hear anywhere else. The JBL ScreenArray loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD amps have more then met our expectations, and the sound we’re getting in our theaters is absolutely spectacular.”

JBL has been awarded three U.S. patents for its ScreenArray technology, created to provide even coverage to every seat, along with wide dynamic range, extended frequency response, maximum power handling and inaudible levels of distortion. The JBL ScreenArray 5742 and 5732 incorporate patented SSC™ Screen Spreading Compensation, which corrects for the high-frequency dispersion of a perforated movie screen when the speakers are placed behind the screen. The 5742 and 5732’s Focused Coverage Technology provides an asymmetrical coverage pattern tilted 10 degrees downward from horizontal to deliver uniform coverage in every seat in either traditional or stadium seating auditoriums.

The JBL 5742 and 5732 both feature a 4-inch titanium high-frequency compression driver operating in conjunction with a patented Optimized Aperture waveguide for uniform frequency response over a large area. The 5742 has a quad midrange array of four 8-inch Differential Drive® cone midrange drivers and two 18-inch woofers, while the 5732 utilizes two 8-inch midrange units and two 15-inch woofers. The 5742 and 5732 can be quad- and tri-amplified, respectively. Both models are ideal for 3D movie theaters, thanks to their expansive sound and precise imaging that complements the 3D on-screen action. The loudspeakers have a shallow profile to accommodate minimum behind the screen depth requirements, and a Flat Front Waveguide design for easy baffle wall installation.

Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers feature a new user-inspired DSP engine co-developed with BSS called OMNIDRIVEHD. The new processing engine features Linear Phase FIR filters that offer unrivaled crossover performance for sonically pure tunings. The OMNIDRIVEHD processing engine also features an innovative new suite of limiters called LevelMAX™. Harman HiQnet™ System Architect ™ mirrors the typical browser navigation interface to provide professionals with a familiar interface to access a host of power configuration and control functions.
