· Demand for mass-market 3D TV is soaring
· Solution helps broadcasters and operators deliver 3D from venue to viewer
· Award honors outstanding technological innovation in the broadcast industry

The editorial staff of TV Technology Magazine awarded the Ericsson 3D Content Delivery Solution, featuring the company’s MPEG-4 AVC HD Contribution Encoder, with the 2010 Star (Superior Technology Award Recipient) at the 2010 NAB Show.

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) was recognized for its solution which addresses challenges in both contribution and distribution as well as direct-to-home delivery of 3D content. The challenges for live 3D contribution differ greatly from DTH, with the utmost being the need for the best picture quality possible including full spatial resolution. Ericsson's large contribution and distribution portfolios have been optimized to ensure that 3D feeds are compressed and delivered correctly.

“Every year, the NAB Show serves as the launching pad for thousands of new products and services for audio and video professionals,” said Tom Butts, TV Technology Editor. “Our panel of editors walk the show floor in search of the most innovative technologies. The products and services that we select for the STAR Award make the cut -- they demonstrate their ability to help advance the acquisition and distribution of entertainment and information across the media spectrum.”

“It is an honor to accept this prestigious industry award. With analysts predicting that close to 80 million 3D TV sets will be sold by 2015, the challenge lies with operators and broadcasters to create and deliver 3D television with the highest picture quality possible over a limited amount of bandwidth. Having pioneered HDTV with our first to market solutions, we’ve applied technology advances to help our customers provide consumers with groundbreaking 3D viewing experiences,” said Staffan Pehrson, Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson.

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, TV Technology’s STAR Award is designed to honor and showcase the outstanding technological innovations available to the broadcast industry. A panel of judges consisting of TV Technology editors and columnists reviewed a variety of products, examined the technical applications and their overall contribution to the industry, and then submitted their award nominees.

About Ericsson 3D Content Delivery Solution:

The Ericsson CExH42 MPEG-4 AVC HD Contribution Encoder provides a natural platform for 3D contribution links, ensuring full control of encoding parameters, exact synchronization and time-stamping of the compressed frames and the generation of a fully packaged 3D simulcast.

Ericsson RX8200 Receiver: new technology for these receivers ensures that the exact temporal and spatial relationship between left and right feeds is also maintained at the receive end, avoiding possibly severe reductions in early 3D customer experience.

Ericsson EN8190 HD encoder: for today's DTH delivery, it is paramount that 3D deployments using frame-compatible methods use the best available compression technology to maximize the consumer 3D experience. This encoder provides the MPEG-4 AVC HD compression, using new in-house technology designed to enable conversion to an all-HD world.

ESPN is deploying a variety of Ericsson 3D and HD products including the complete solution for direct-to-home and contribution and distribution of 3D content. The Ericsson solution delivers more efficient bandwidth usage while ensuring the transmissions meet ESPN's high standards for picture quality.
