Harris Powers 3DTV Workflows for Broadcasters

End-to-End Demonstrations

Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, is powering end-to-end 3DTV workflows at the 2010 NAB Show. Harris will demonstrate how the company is capable of enabling broadcasters to employ a 3DTV-ready operation easily and cost-effectively when they are ready.

"3DTV is poised to be the next big thing in TV, and Harris employs a practical approach to helping broadcasters implement this emerging technology without breaking the bank," said Harris Morris, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. "Customers can buy Harris equipment today with confidence that it will be ready for 3DTV when they are — whether that's soon or further down the road. Most of our 1.5 Gb/s and 3 Gb/s products are software-keyed, so customers don't pay for 3DTV support until they're ready to make the leap to 3DTV broadcasting."

Media companies already are making forays into 3DTV broadcast using Harris technology. Harris collaborated with Madison Square Garden for the first-ever network hockey telecast produced in 3DTV (for the Rangers vs. Islanders match-up held March 24). Harris supplied NetVX™ encoders and a range of signal processing equipment, which was used to ensure synchronous transport of the 3DTV signals from Madison Square Garden to the network operations center.

"Studies indicate that a quarter of viewers expect to invest in a 3DTV set within the next three years, so broadcasters are gearing up to meet the resulting demand for programming," Morris said. "A Harris 3DTV workflow enables broadcasters to efficiently move bandwidth-hungry signals inside and between facilities economically — and they don't have to overhaul their infrastructure to be 3DTV ready."

Whether a broadcaster is building a facility from the ground up or adding 3DTV capabilities to an existing operation, Harris delivers a complete 3DTV workflow - from content contribution to processing to distribution. Forming the core of this workflow are proven Harris technologies including CENTRIO™ and QVM6800+ multiviewers; Harris automation systems; the IconMaster™ master control switcher; Inscriber® production graphics systems; NetVX and NetPlus™ networking and encoding; NEXIO® ingest and playout servers; OPTO+™ fiber optics; Platinum™ routers; the QuiC™ media analysis server; Velocity™ editors; and X50/X85™ signal processors. Harris is an active participant in industrywide 3DTV standardization efforts, and the company's 3DTV solutions encompass both the baseband and the file-based workflow needed to support 3DTV.

Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks.
