GTC takes to the air March 27

Helicopter Shooting

A workshop on Helicopter Shooting and Safety will be held by the Guild of Television Cameramen on Saturday March 27 at Denham Aerodrome, west London. The event will be hosted by broadcaster Mike Smith, founder and Managing Director of Flying TV which owns and operates the only freelance ready-to-go fleet of television helicopters in Europe. Mike will explain the principles of flight and safety, and will cover everything cameramen need to know about working in the air with gyro-mounted and hand-held cameras.

Da Vinci 3D rig

Jeremy Braben of Helicopter Film Services will show the mounts and helicopters he uses for shooting major movie sequences on formats up to 65 mm and I-Max. The company's Da Vinci 3D rig allows 'hyper-stereo' 3D aerial sequences to be shot using Arri film or Red Cinema HD cameras.

Three GTC members will also speak on the day:
Alan Duxbury on the events surrounding his crash while filming with Ray Mears;
Laurie K. Gilbert on his worldwide career of aerial shooting in all formats including cine, video and stills;
Senior F1 cameraman Rex Palmer on his experiences of working from helicopters and of ditching at sea.
One member will be selected by draw on the day for the opportunity to fly a helicopter and to hold a hover for 60 seconds.

To reserve places on this workshop, email GTC Workshops Coordinator Clive North on workshops.07@gtc.org.uk. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
The Guild of Television Cameramen invites applications for membership from anyone employed as a television camera operator or in any associated occupation.
Full membership: £65 per annum. Cameramen with at least three years of experience in an established grade in any branch of professional television.
Associate membership: £40 per annum. Those who operate cameras in any branch of professional television but have less than three years of full-time experience.
Affiliate membership: £65 per annum. Those who are ineligible for any other grade of membership but who would, at the discretion of the GTC, further or promote the guild's objectives. Applications for this grade must be supported by the sponsoring signatures of two full GTC members.
Student membership: £20.00 per annum. Those attending a full or part time course recognised by the GTC as being appropriate. Retired membership: £30 per annum.

Guild of Television Cameramen

Formed in 1972, the Guild of Television Cameramen has over 1,000 members in countries as far afield as Australia, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA. The majority work in aspects of television ranging from corporate video production through news and current-affairs, sports and light entertainment, to documentary and drama. The GTC is a non-profit-making organisation run by a council of volunteer television professionals. It is financed by subscription from its members as well as sponsorship from equipment manufacturers and suppliers. As a result, the GTC offers a channel for manufacturers to consult with working cameramen when designing new equipment. The GTC is an authoritative source of advice and information on all matters concerning television content production. Its aim is to preserve the professional status of television cameramen and to advance standards and expertise within the profession.
