Binocle’s rigs: “Brigger I”, “Brigger II” and “Brigger III”

Ten years after the first fully motion-controlled rig was developed by Binocle / Thomson / Angénieux, Binocle has improved its techniques to provide a full range of equipment to satisfy all shooting requirements.

This new range of three rigs offers innovative features in terms of weight, handling and size. All three rigs can accommodate all types of cameras whatever their weight and size. They allow use of stereoscopic equipment in confined spaces, on a steadycam, shoulder brace or any other device designed for the cameras currently available on the market. All three rigs are suitable for motion-controlled operation and recording.The management system allows real-time remote control to ensure extremely fast and accurate 3D mastering. The following motion parameters can be controlled:

• Interocular distance
• Convergence
• Zoom
• Focus
• Aperture

Brigger I, II and III include:

• four motorized optical mounts (2 axes for fixed focal length lenses)
• six motorized optical mounts (3 axes for zoom lenses)
• motion control commands
• viewing screen
• accessories

Binocle DisparityTagger: A real-time visualization and correction software

The Binocle DisparityTagger has been developed by Binocle in collaboration with INRIA and taking advantage of the computational power of the NVIDIA solutions. The DisparityTagger allows the stereographer to master stereoscopic shots by giving him access to a large range of visualization tools to detect image problems in real time. The SDI output capability of the DisparityTagger allows to stream the corrected signals for the left and right eye.

The software developed by Binocle allows the two stereoscopic fluxes to be viewed in real time. The operator is free to choose between different stereo visual control modes. Images can be displayed in alternative mode, with polarization, but also superimposed, in anaglyph format, side by side, with a mobile shutter, etc.

DisparityTagger can be customized to work with all systems available on the market. It has 2 inputs (HDSDI and/or HDMI). The outputs vary depending on the visualization mode:

• dual DVI for cameras equipped with polarizing filters or set in alternative mode
• single DVI or HDMI for one-flux alternative monitoring
• single DVI or HDMI for polarized and interlaced systems
• single DVI or HDMI for anaglyphs

Visual alerts notify the operator of unacceptable disparities caused by too much out-of-the-screen effect or background offset depending on the size of the viewing screen.

The package includes the software and its platform (capture and display card, CPU, 12V or 110/220V power supply and software all included). It displays the following:

• stereoscopic 3D disparities
• uncorrected images
• corrected images
• acceptable stereoscopic 3D limits
• recorded frame area
• corrected frame area

Finally, the software enables low-frequency, real-time visualization of geometric disparity corrections (vertical, trapezoid, etc.) or of lens-related magnification.
