Vinten supports the X Factor

Capturing all the performances on ITV’s The X Factor – shot in London’s Fountain Studios - called for fast and fluid movement from the cameras. One of the ways to achieve that freedom was with the use of Vinten Quattro-S pedestals with Vision 250 heads, supplied by The Camera Store. The Quattro-S pedestal retains all the advantages of the Vinten Quattro – perfect balance over the whole of its one metre height adjustment, with smooth and silent on-shot moves – but with a smaller footprint. Under the pressure of a fast-moving live show like The X Factor this means that more cameras could get close to the action in the confined area at the front of the stage. “The whole show was all about creating high excitement, which means lots of unusual camera angles and plenty of movement,” said Simon Tyres, camera supervisor on the production. “The Vinten Quattro S allowed me to move wherever the director calls, and never restricts my movements. It is the perfect pedestal for live light entertainment.” The X Factor is produced by Syco Productions and Talkback Thames.

DK-Technologies shows its solution to the loudness issue

DK-Technologies will be showing its MSD100C Loudness meter at this year’s Broadcast Video Expo (Stand F5). The company will also be showing its MSD600M++ audio meter and its PT0760 multichannel waveform monitor, both of which can incorporate DK’s proprietary Loudness software. There is no doubt that loudness is currently a hot topic for the broadcast and post production industries. Both the UK and Italian Governments have already introduced guidelines to tackle complaints from viewers who don’t like the difference in volume between programme material and commercial breaks. Other countries around the world are beginning to follow suit and in February 2010 it is expected that the European Broadcast Union (EBU) will join the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) in announcing its preferred parameters for measuring loudness.

RTW- The Loudness family

The evaluation of frequency, measuring of individual channels with short integration time period (production), signal summation with average integration time period (production and broadcast) and long-term measuring (broadcast and monitoring) are a few of the requirements for loudness monitoring.

Pictorvision captures exciting footage for "Clash of the Titans"

Pilot Fred North has just completed his second project for director Louis Leterrier, and his first with Pictorvision’s new state-of-the-art Eclipse helicopter camera mount system. “I did Leterrier’s last movie with a different system,” says North. “It didn’t have a perfect horizon level and could not look straight down. For Clash of the Titans, Louis and cinematographer Peter Menzies Jr. wanted to have a different system with perfect horizon level at all times to fly at a speed approaching 135 mph through steep canyons in Tenerife (Spain) and be able to look straight down. So I suggested the Eclipse and they confirmed it.”
