Eleven month ago on 23 February 2010 TopVision started with a first 3D trial by covering the UEFA Champions League match VFB Stuttgart – FC Barcelona and three weeks later DFL and Sportcast produced the Bundesliga match Bayer Leverkusen – Hamburger SV together with TopVision in 3D. Since that Sportcast has carried out four more 3D trials in Germany with TopVision (DFB Cup matches Bayern Munich – Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt – Hamburger SV, FC Augsburg – Schalke 04) and with WIGE (Herta BSC Berlin – MSV Duisburg). And on 16 January Sportcast started with the regular 3D productions with the match 1.FC Cologne – 1.FC Kaiserslautern followed by the match Borusia Mönchengladbach – Bayer Leverkusen on 23 January.

The exact number appears to be a matter of debate. According to a recent report from DisplayBank, 6.2M 3D HDTVs shipped worldwide in 2010. DisplaySearch says that number is 3.2M. How can there be such a big difference in these numbers? Frankly, I have no idea.
Many 3D HDTV forecasts, covering a whole range of numbers, were issued during 2010. Some firms increased or decreased their forecasts as market conditions changed — which is fine for inventory control, but more troubling for long-term planning.

During the last few years 3D has progressed a huge amount. Most mainstream films are now released with a 3D version. In most cases outperforms 2D at the box office– for instance the biggest grossing film of all time is Avatar, which was primarily released in 3D. It is also making inroads to the television market with some sporting events being broadcast in 3D to pubs and, albeit in a limited number, homes with 3D equipment.

At this year’s Integrated Systems Show at Amsterdam, Natural View Systems from Buttenheim (Germany) will present a world first: the iVu display system for spatially enhanced stereoscopic reproduction of video images. The patents pending algorithm used by iVu computes a 3-D spatial image from every possible digital 2D-content. The system outputs the processed signal in real-time and is applicable to video content in any format and resolution. Watching spatial video produced by iVu requires just a standard HD autostereoscopic screen. The image can be enjoyed without glasses as the spectators are used to it by other systems.

SENSIO Technologies Inc. (SENSIO) (TSX.V: SIO) and CyberLink Corporation today announced an agreement through which SENSIO's 3D decoding technology will be integrated into the Cyberlink PowerDVD media player software for retail sale and in custom versions for the OEM market.
