Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announced that a range of its 3DTV-compliant broadcast equipment is being used by Nine Network and SBS to support Australia’s first 3DTV trials. The trials will include coverage of this year’s Harvey Norman State of Origin Series rugby showdown — the world’s first sporting event to be broadcast live in 3D on free-to-air TV — and the 3D screening by SBS of selected football matches from South Africa.

The Spanish company pioneering in stereoscopy, Kronomav, and the Portuguese company specialized in the transmission of live events, Medialuso, signed an agreement for broadcasting 3D events live worldwide. The commitment of both companies for R & D applied to the world of stereoscopy has resulted in an ambitious goal: to bring immersive 3D experience of the big live events to viewers.

Foxtel brought the first-ever live 3D sport broadcast event to Australian homes during the soccer match played between Australia and New Zealand. The live production was managed by Fox Sports and included replay actions, slow motion and highlights made with EVS technology.

At this year’s Cinema Expo 2010 Sony Professional is unveiling for the first time its new Sony Digital Cinema 4K logo trailer, which will introduce this Sony brand category to cinema audiences around the world – of course in 4K. The logo trailer will be presented across all industry leading cinemas that use Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection systems ahead of the latest blockbuster feature films.

Madrid-based Polecam specialists Cristian Martínez and Juan Carlos Bergantiños (Poleshot Production) have completed a successful commission for Televisión de Catalunya (TV3) as part of a team televising the 2010 UEFA Champions League football final in Spain. Held on May 22 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, home of Real Madrid, the match between F.C. Internazionale Milano and Bayern Munich was televised in 3D via a total of 13 cameras including Polecam, Spidercam, Steadicam and overhead shots from a helicopter. Production was managed by Catalan public-service broadcaster Televisión de Catalunya (TV3) which was commissioned by UEFA to cover the event.

Boadcasters and Production companies are focussing on 3D, so does the Canadian supplier Evertz Microsystems.

ARRI announced that the new ALEXA camera is currently shipping. Production ramp-up of the new camera is now underway, with initial delivery priority given to customers who purchased the flagship D-21 camera following ALEXA’sunveiling to the market at IBC2009.

In December 2009, FIFA and Sony announced plans for 3D coverage of 25 FIFA World Cup matches. Integral in the selection and adoption of the technologies were Peter Angell, HBS director of production & programming, who served as FIFA special 3D project leader, and Duncan Humphreys, 3D consultant to HBS for the World Cup and partner in UK-based 3D production company Can Communicate.
