Cobalt Digital’s Dual-Channel MPEG Encoder Delivers for IMS Productions
IMS Productions supplies a full range of media services from two state-of-the-art HD trucks and a fleet of support vehicles for every major network reporting from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. IMS has taken delivery of Cobalt Digital’s new 9223 dual-channel 3G/HD/SD MPEG-4 encoder to transport multiple feeds to various devices for Verizon IndyCar race coverage. The 9223 will send live signals to Verizon’s IndyCar app for mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets, as well as to car cameras and to race officials’ “race control” panel on the day of the race via a live car position track map generated from timing and scoring data and audio scanner feeds.

Sound Devices 788T Uncovers the Sounds of the Sea
First Commercial Underwater Surround Sound Film: Recorded offshore from the Caribbean island of Bonaire in November 2011, the documentary is titled The Cannon Crackers of the Pistol Shrimp. As one of the loudest animals on the planet, pistol shrimp live in colonies of up to 16,000 and snap their claws so fast together the water around them vaporizes. They also create bubbles, which implode with a loud cracking sound. The cracking noises, along with vibrant imagery of the shrimp, form the basis of this groundbreaking film. In addition to two Sound Devices 788T recorders, a Sonar Surround RS5 underwater surround rig attached to the Sound Devices underwater 7 Series housing with four Sonar Surround DS30 directivity spheres, each equipped with an Ambient TC4042 hydrophone were used. Three Ambient TC 4013S hydrophones were attached to one of the camera housings and one Ambient TC4032 hydrophone was used to record far-off sounds.

Shotoku Enables HD Production Facility for Swiss Radio & Television in Zurich
tpc, a subsidiary of Swiss Radio and Television (SRF), is responsible for technology and production of television, radio and multimedia for the public broadcasting entity. The company selected three TG-18 high performance remote pan and tilt heads with multiple, distributed controls and Shotoku's full Resilient Network Interface (RNI) option for enhanced system resilience. The configuration also incorporates two Ti-11 I-Height elevator pedestals, a pair of advanced TR-8T Touch Screen control systems, plus a TR-8B basic control panel and its companion TR-HP hot panel.

Oman TV’s New High Definition Studios with Vinten and Vinten Radamec
Sony Professional Solutions MEA (PSMEA) is implementing the system integration for Oman TV’s new $69 million broadcast complex, which launched in November 2011. The Vinten and Vinten Radamec products were selected by Oman TV as part of an international tender and are due to be delivered to the studios by the end of April 2012. The order, for a total of 100 Vinten and Vinten Radamec products, includes Vinten’s Quartz two Pedestals, Vector 750 and the Vision 100 pan and tilt heads, as well as Vinten Radamec’s FH-100 Fusion heads and FP-188 robotic pedestals. The complex, based in the country’s capital, Muscat, will include four digital production studios, a news editing hall, three radio studios and production rooms.

Olympic Games 2012: Gymnastics - Artistic
Hugely popular with audiences all over the world, Artistic Gymnastics looks set to draw huge crowds to North Greenwich Arena during the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Artistic Gymnastics competition will be held at the state-of-the-art Arena on the River Thames. The grace, strength and skill of Olympic gymnasts have been astonishing audiences since the Games in Ancient Greece, where Gymnastics was regarded as the perfect symmetry between mind and body. The best known of the three Gymnastics disciplines, Artistic Gymnastics is always among the most popular competitions at the Games. The first competition to be contested in London on 28 July is the team event, which doubles as the qualification round for the individual and all-around contests.

EVS at SVG Summit in Paris

Celebration Time: grandMA2 Joins Australia Day
Celebrated annually on 26th January Australia Day (previously known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day, and ANA Day) is the official national day of Australia. The date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland. Community festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies accompany the day in large and small communities and cities around the nation. A special event is always the celebrations in Sydney – like this year in the town’s Darling Harbour. For the show taking place there lighting designer and video content producer Paul Collison again relied on MA Lighting products. In detail he used 2 x grandMA2 light and 1 x MA NPU (Network Processing Unit) as well as the grandMA2 3D software for previsualisation.

Solid State Logic Congratulates - and Thanks - this Year's Grammy Winners
The company is extremely proud that more than 80 percent of the winning projects in the categories that recognise the quality of recorded music involved artists, producers or engineers who regularly use SSL consoles. This is also the first year that a Grammy winning broadcast has been recorded using one of SSL’s broadcast consoles, which the company first launched in 2003. The Grammy for Best Opera Recording went to Metropolitan Opera (the Met) for its live HD transmission and DVD recording of Doctor Atomic by composer John Adams. This performance was part of the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series, in which operas are broadcast live to theatres around the world and subsequently broadcast on PBS. The music production for all of the Met’s live television and radio broadcasts is done use using SSL’s C100 HDS digital broadcast console, installed in 2008 at the Met.

London Fashion Week Comes to Life with Blackmagic Design!
Internationally recognized as a driving force behind innovation in fashion, Vauxhall Fashion Scout actively promotes both new and seasoned designers to an international audience through catwalk shows, presentations, fashion films and exhibitions. Based during London Fashion Week at the Freemasons’ Hall in central London, Fashion Scout looked to Brightonart to produce the catwalk videos that would be uploaded to Vimeo. Brightonart used Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher to cut live footage from HD-SDI video feeds shot by two Sony EX-1 cameras. Program output was then captured on two SSD recorders; a Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio recording uncompressed 10-bit as a rolling backup and the other using DNxHD or ProRes as the master working file.

Matrox Adds Exciting New Features to Convert DVI Plus HD-SDI Scan Converter
New features make Matrox Convert DVI Plus even simpler and more convenient to use. Automatic input detection is particularly important for A/V integrators who might regularly deal with a variety of input devices in the course of their work. Now any computer running at any resolution can be connected at the input, and Matrox Convert DVI will automatically output at the desired, preprogrammed resolution. The graphic overlay feature lets users add a custom logo or graphic to Convert DVI’s output. For example, any PNG or TGA file can be displayed over a YouTube video, a Skype conversation, or a Google Earth map. “Skip The Use”, Latest Show of the 3D Live Project
On February 14, 3DLIVE partners were committed to generate a very strong sense of immersion through the use of new optical cameras optimized for S3D, leveraging the designs of these innovative cameras which were used on a telescopic crane and a S3D shoulder mounted rig. The setting of these camera rigs was decided by the Director and the stereograph by using Binocle’s Disparity Tagger software, ensuring visual comfort of the S3D. The quality of the S3D experience of the viewer was further increased by using new S3D graphics techniques and special effects for live broadcast.

The 2020 3D Media Project in Berlin
For the demonstration itself a 270º screen with 16 3D-sound channels was installed. The development of the 3D sound by Barcelona Media was the work of a start-up company which is integrating its 3D solutions in cinemas around the world. Another of the start-ups from the project is Camargus, a company which sells specialised audiovisual solutions using stitching technology developed at the University of Hasselt. Another of the demonstrations in Berlin showcased the signal distribution solution created by DataSat and the Technicolor warehousing based on a 10Gb Ethernet solution. The technologies developed by the other partners (Joanneum Research, Mediapro Research, University of Reading, Digital Projection, Grass Valley and Doremi), had been exhibited in previous events.
