German SKY Sport News HD Studio Shines with mo2 design and the coolux Widget Designer
The German company mo2 design GmbH was enlisted to take care of the complete illumination and lighting control in the studio and parts of the foyer, from where one can look back into the studio. All relevant lighting fixtures and even the LED tickers had to be centrally controlled in order to ensure flexible and camera friendly light. While mosart was used as an agenda control system for the whole studio, coolux’s Widget Designer Software was the main tool when it came to realising the advanced lighting and media control set-up. Under normal circumstances, all studio systems, not just the lighting controls, can be operated by just two operators.

MediaCorp Defines the Languages of Communications
A very conventional TV theatre at the home of Singapore's leading broadcaster MediaCorp, was looking for a slightly unconventional sound system. "MediaCorp's audio team headed by Mr Sherman Lee (Senior Manager, Sound), stated very clearly from the start the objectives they would like to achieve," Kenny Chng of d&b audiotechnik S.E. Asia explained: so far, so conventional. "The TV theatre is capable of housing an audience of eight hundred. The team's desire was for a more direct frontal coverage from a front of house PA as compared to the pre-existing 'top down' dispersion." The studio received a full technical makeover during this period, the principal contract being the responsibility of Electronics and Engineering (E&E) Pte Ltd who physically installed the PA with Soon Chee Boon being the supervising engineer. Kenny Chng and his team from d&b audiotechnik S.E. Asia defined the loudspeaker configuration and signal routing and completed the tuning and commissioning in September 2011.

2011 MTV EMAs Broadcast Live with Blackmagic Design ATEM
Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher was used to bring exclusive behind the scenes footage to viewers from numerous cameras located on the red carpet and backstage. Video bumpers, lower thirds and inserts, including a red carpet fashion highlights package, were played out using Blackmagic Design’s Media Express software and were mixed using ATEM’s built in DVE and chroma key functions. The show’s production room had four Apple Final Cut Pro editing stations equipped with DeckLink Studio cards for broadcast quality monitoring, along with three live ingest stations with DeckLink Duo cards. Video sources were managed using Blackmagic Design’s Micro Videohub, which was controlled by a Smart Control panel, allowing a fully tapeless production workflow that routed content to various on site OB trucks. Live webcasts of the show with additional backstage footage were also mixed during commercial breaks using the ATEM 1/ME Production Switcher and ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel, along with a number of Mini Converters, to piece together all incoming footage.

The Solution of Choice at Swiss Television | opticamSWITCH
An investment in expensive HD and 3D equipment can be optimized by dint of a well-conceived, flexible system architecture, paired with a fiber optic camera switch solution. Swiss Television carefully considered how best to deploy its existing HD and 3D equipment within an expansion of its studio infrastructure. tpc ag (technology and production center, Switzerland ag) – an independent subsidiary of SRG SSR – considered various new ideas and opted for a future-proof concept. Neutrik’s opticamSWITCH flexibly connects tpc ag’s existing cameras and control rooms to one other. Furthermore, as they come online, two planned new control rooms and studios will be easily integrated into the system. Since opticamSWITCH is a fiber optic camera switching system, mechanical wear, costly maintenance, and possible mechanical failure are eliminated, resulting in a robust, reliable solution. Integration into existing control systems, with control via software, enables automation and allows for real-time control over complex wiring structures. This increase in efficiency – with significant reduction of potential errors – led tpc to employ the opticamSWITCH concept in its “BigSwitch” project. After some trial and smaller productions, the system was put into use on a grand scale at the live production “Decision 11 – Swiss National Council elections.”

Danish Radio: Completing Digital Audio Workflow
The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), Denmark’s national broadcasting corporation, has just consolidated all its television, radio and media programming into one mega-facility. The newly-built DR Byen complex in Cophenhagen is made up of four buildings spread over 133,000 square meters. The large format digital audio consoles chosen for DR Byen to provide the power, flexibility and sound quality for multiple uses were Solid State Logic C200 HD Digital Production and the C100 Series Digital Broadcast consoles. DR has a long and successful history with SSL analogue consoles – it has over the years installed more than ten SSL 4000 series consoles for television and radio production, in both fixed studios and OB vans. For this new complex, DR Byen has installed three C100 and eight C200 consoles. “We were very fortunate to have the tenders from SSL accepted for 11 primary studios,” explains Lund. “Our entire engineering staff is very familiar with the ergonomic layout of an SSL 4000 console, so the transition to the new digital consoles was straightforward. We are using them for live music broadcast and capture onto Pro Tools® and Pyramix DAW systems, television and radio news programming, live talk and interview programmes and radio drama programming.

It sounds luscious!” Blurr also used a sensitivity-selected pair of DPA 4099P instrument clip mics for miking the grand piano, with one mic positioned at each end of the strings and the lid half open. “The 4099’s small but packs lot of punches, allowing you to achieve studio-like quality in a live environment,” continues Blurr. “With the extensive range of DPA mounting accessories available, these mics may also be used with other instruments, giving a flexibility which is extremely useful for rental houses.”
