Vizrt nominated twice for 2016 Sports Technology Awards

Partner project and coaching implementation shortlisted for 2016

Following significant growth into the sports technology market, Vizrt, a leading provider of production tools for the digital media industry, has been recognised amongst the best technology providers at the 2016 Sports Technology Awards. Recent projects with spidercam and Derby County FC have been included in the Best Partnership in Multiple Sports and Best Technology for Managers and Coaches categories, respectively.

Leading up to the 2015/16 season of the Football League Championship, Derby County implemented Vizrt’s leading 3D virtual sports enhancement solution, Viz Libero, into its coaching toolkit. Nominated for the Best Technology for Managers and Coaches award, the club turned to the tool which is predominantly used by broadcasters. With Viz Libero it’s able to visualise 3D replays, virtual camera angles, distance measurements, player movement and automatic player tracking information onto self-captured video content.

The implementation of this solution allows coaches at the club to visually communicate complex messages quickly, clearly and easily - eliminating any language barrier. This installation is an indication not only of the powerful visualisation Vizrt graphics are able to provide coaches but also of how clubs are embracing technology in every way possible to improve their performance. The technology collaboration nominated for Best Partnership in Multiple Sports is between Vizrt and spidercam GmbH. The spidercam system which is implemented into a huge amount of stadiums and venues around the world is a robotic, cable-suspended camera which is able to cover the entire pitch or field without interruption to the action happening live.

Its partnership with Vizrt takes advantage of the spidercam’s special tracking system, “spidercam Vector.” This collects the position and orientation of the camera as it navigates around the stadium and feeds this data, together with zoom and focus information from the camera itself, into Vizrt’s Viz Virtual Studio. Here the data is synchronised with a virtual camera inside a Viz Engine real-time 3D rendering platform. This means the camera is able to interact with graphics placed onto the field and produce unique flights through and around virtual objects for viewers at home or in the stadium.
