ARD to Broadcast Live from the 40th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON

Organiser SCC EVENTS licenses media rights for comprehensive national broadcast coverage of the event in Germany through to 2016

Organiser SCC EVENTS has awarded the national media rights for the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON to SportA, the sports-rights agency of ARD and ZDF. The German public broadcaster ARD and the regional broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) are to report live starting from this year’s event held on 29 September 2013, and then on an exclusive basis from 2014. The contract has a term of four years and was brokered by Infront Sports & Media, marketing partner of SCC EVENTS.

The media rights acquired by ARD will provide comprehensive coverage across all its channels and media platforms, including radio programmes. In addition to the live broadcast, some ARD stations are also planning to accompany the 2013 anniversary event with extensive pre and post event reporting with immediate effect.

High-quality HD production with more than 20 cameras
The Infront subsidiary Host Broadcast Services (HBS) is handling the production of a high-quality HDTV signal starting this year. More than 20 cameras – mounted on vehicles that include a helicopter, lead car and escort motorcycles amongst others – will accompany the running event across the German capital. A total of 40,000 people are participating at the marathon this year.

Axel Balkausky, Sports Coordinator at ARD, said: “Endurance competitions in Germany inspire and enthuse more people every year – whether as a participant or spectator. We are taking this popularity into account by including this globally recognised marathon event in Berlin as a top national event in our sports programming. We are convinced that this race in the unique setting of the capital will fascinate many of our viewers this year.”

Increased visibility for the event
Jürgen Lock, General Manager of SCC EVENTS, commented: “The coverage on public television underlines the importance of the BWM BERLIN-MARATHON in the German sports landscape. We look forward to working with ARD and to providing our event, as one of the best of its kind on a global scale, and its partners with an even greater presence Germany-wide. We are sure to inject even more people with marathon fascination via this platform.”
