59th annual New Year's ski-jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with Electro-Voice

Electro-Voice systems were in action once again at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen leg of ski-jumping's Four Hills Tournament

With Oberstdorf, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen has for 59 years been one of the venues for the world famous Four Hills ski-jumping tournament. Traditionally the resort in Upper Bavaria hosts the event – one of the highlights of the winter sport's calendar – on the 1st January each year. In 2011, no fewer than 25,000 fans provided a motivating backdrop for the competitors.

The task of keeping spirits up in ice cold temperatures fell to the commentator Wolfgang Hostmann partnered by DJ "Mike". A practiced team, the pair acquitted themselves with flying colours, helped in no small measure by the quality of the sound reinforcement, for which the Weilheim-based specialists from TC-Showtechnik were responsible for the fifth year in succession. Once again, the centrepiece of the system was formed by a compact yet powerful XLD line array from Electro-Voice. "After optimizing and adding to the system several times, we arrived at the ideal set-up for this event, which we don't propose now to change," states Martin Schulze, who with Stefan Rehthaler shares the management of the Bavarian rental company. "We are fortified in this resolution by the outstanding feedback we received once again this year regarding the sound."

TC Showtechnik relied on Electro-Voice equipment – including an XLD line array and a NetMax digital matrix controller – for the sound reinforcement

As was the case last year, the main array comprised sixteen EV XLD 218 array elements flown at a height of 14 metres from a sound reinforcement tower, with eight DYNACORD V17 enclosures (flown) and six EV X-Subs (stacked) providing added support in the low frequency range. To provide even coverage throughout the 140-wide spectator area, TC-Showtechnik deployed eight additional EV XLD systems on a delay line. The system was driven from an amp rack loaded with two EV CPS 4.10 power amplifiers and one EV CPS 8.5. "We purchased the rack over a year ago," says Schulze, "and we are extremely satisfied. It offers masses of power and yet is only six rack units high. Moreover, it is extremely versatile, being suitable not only for concerts, but also – thanks to its durability – for outdoor productions."

Naturally the same dB constraints applied to the 2011 production as to those of previous years. Particularly critical was the sound level in the 'mix gate' (the area reserved for TV and radio interviews), which had to be 6 dB quieter than in the main spectator area. "This stipulation used to be a source of stress for us," remembers Schulze, "but now that we have an Electro-Voice N8000-1500 loudspeaker controller we can sleep easy, as it makes the implementation of a segmented sound reinforcement solution a simple matter."
