Teradek Announces New Line of 1080 and 4K HEVC (H.265) Codecs

Teradek today announced the addition of several new 1080 and 4K HEVC codecs to their award-winning line of Cube, Slice, and T-Rax devices. Available in portable, rack mount, and high density configurations, the new HEVC systems offer incredible performance at highly competitive prices starting at just $2990.

“We’re super excited to bring HEVC technology to mainstream video producers,” said Nicol Verheem, Founder and CEO of Teradek. "We believe there are two reasons why HEVC has had such a lackluster adoption so far: first, the early vendors priced their products too high, which made them beyond the reach of most customers and too expensive for even the biggest customers to deploy on a large scale. Secondly, most platforms and devices are not capable of decoding HEVC, so there is no simple way to gain the benefits of the superior compression aside from point to point installations. We solved both problems with the new Cube series. A $3000 device can now use HEVC for the uplink to the cloud, which is always the most expensive bandwidth, and then seamlessly transcode the feed our Core cloud service. From there, users can publish to any platform using any bit rate, resolution, or format.  It’s the best of both worlds."

HEVC, also known as H.265, is a next generation compression standard that offers up to 2x the encoding performance and better bandwidth utilization than AVC H.264. Teradek’s new HEVC platform allow users to achieve the same video quality of H.264 video at half the bit rate. This translates into substantial bandwidth savings for broadcasters, cutting the cost of bonded cellular transmissions and clearing up overhead on IP video networks.

The new additions to the Cube line include the Cube 700 (1080p60) and the Cube 800 (2160p30), both of which include the capability to switch between AVC and HEVC from the configuration menu. Each system is housed in a super rugged, ultra portable chassis that takes just 6W of power during operation. Like all Cube models, comprehensive protocol support is standard, as is the ability to stream to any online video platform, to Teradek & 3rd party decoders, and to iOS and Android devices.

The 1080 HEVC Cube 700 series is available early May 2017 for $2990
The 4K HEVC Cube 800 series is available late Q3 2017 for $3990

Core Upgrades for Teradek HEVC Codecs

To simplify the integration of HEVC into existing broadcaster workflows, Teradek is upgrading their Core platform to include real-time transcoding. With transcoding, users can stream to Core in HEVC and then transcode to AVC for content delivery, preserving compatibility while taking advantage of HEVC’s bandwidth savings.

New Bond Module & Node Modems

Built to slide seamlessly onto Teradek’s Cube 600, 700, and 800 models, the Bond module enables Cube to stream over up to 5x 3G / 4G / LTE connections at the same time for enhanced connectivity and bandwidth redundancy. To keep the system running constantly while on the move, an integrated Li-Ion battery will give users 5 minutes of extra runtime to swap out larger batteries.

To maximize Bond’s performance, Teradek is introducing a new line of rugged cellular modems called Node. Node comes with USB or Lemo connections, allowing them to be used with any of Teradek’s existing encoder line up (USB) or with the new Bond module, which is offered with either USB or Lemo inputs. Each Node offers high performance 3G / 4G / LTE connectivity across several regions around the world, including North America, South America, Europe, and Japan.

Bond module is available Early May 2017 for $1990
Node is available Early May 2017 for $699

New Slice and T-Rax HEVC Cards

The new Slice and T-Rax systems are based on the same HEVC platform as Cube, but provide a rack-mount form factor and your choice of HD 1080 or UHD 4K. Both systems are compatible with the Core cloud platform and will begin shipping in Q2 of 2017.

Teradek’s new HEVC codecs will be on display at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas Nevada, April 24 - 27 @ booth: C6025.
