Preview: Guild of Television Cameramen at BVE 2011

The Guild of Television Cameramen is an independent international organisation that cares about TV camerawork and the people who make it their craft. GTC members operate cameras professionally in all areas of broadcasting. As well as organising an extensive schedule of workshops and seminars which are free to members, the GTC publishes a highly regarded magazine filled with items of practical interest to cameramen and an informative and topical regular newsletter for members. A GTC members' email forum enables cameramen from all around the world exchange ideas, advice, experience and information. The GTC maintains direct contact with leading camera manufacturers and broadcasting organisations. It also provides an online 'search for a cameraman' facility featuring members' CVs.

Upcoming events include a GTC Workshop, 'Keeping Ahead of the Game', which will be held at Aerial Camera Systems in Godalming, Surrey, on Tuesday 11 January. This will include demonstrations of the company's innovative SMARTheads, rail and vehicle-mounted Cineflex and Gyron stabilised heads, and vertical tracking kit. Numbers will be limited but it is hoped to provide the GTC's first webcast from a workshop for the benefit of members at large. This workshop is only open to GTC members with a practical knowledge of outside broadcast and studio work. Attendees will be selected by ACS. About the Guild of Television Cameramen

Formed in 1972, the Guild of Television Cameramen has over 1,000 members in countries as far afield as Australia, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA. The majority work in aspects of television ranging from corporate video production through news and current-affairs, sports and light entertainment, to documentary and drama. The GTC is a non-profit-making organisation run by a council of volunteer television professionals. It is financed by subscription from its members as well as sponsorship from equipment manufacturers and suppliers. As a result, the GTC offers a channel for manufacturers to consult with working cameramen when designing new equipment. The GTC is an authoritative source of advice and information on all matters concerning television content production. Its aim is to preserve the professional status of television cameramen and to advance standards and expertise within the profession. Membership is open to anyone employed as a television camera operator or in any associated occupation.
