The New Brilliance of the Tagesschau®

Ambion GmbH and Lang AG equipped the new NDR-studio

This year, Germany’s most traditional news program Tagesschau was able to celebrate moving into their new TV-studio. What attracts attention beside its new trailer and modified design is the 18 meter long, curved media wall in the background. It offers rear projection possibilities in its entire width. Apart from this central element, the 320 square meters large TV-studio comes up with the latest camera- and lighting technology. Everything was accurately attuned, so that a news studio could be created which pursues a completely new approach: the presenter leads through the whole program in front of a real projected background.

The conception and construction phase lasted several years. The idea for a modernised studio already existed in 2009. In course of the planning, also the vision of the 18 meter large media wall evolved.

The people in charge of the ARD-aktuell editorial team had precise ideas for this media wall. It should offer a display area in the size of 40 square meters. Moreover, it should be curved and have interactive sections. A particular challenge was the permanent operation, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ambion GmbH and LANG AG accepted the challenge and discussed with responsible staff from ARD-aktuell and NDR about various rudiments for the realisation of the media wall. “We were excited by this task. Whilst we’re rather an event-designer than a classical system integrator in this market the unique format and dimension was the challenge in this project. The commercial part was more or less secondary for us.” says Christian Sommer from Ambion.

With regards to the realisation it emerges that “only a rear projection is able to fulfil the majority of the points”, says Stefan Rickmann, NDR project manager. First of all, a company needed to be found which was able to produce the colossal polycarbonate glass for the back wall. LANG, as the technical consultant in this project, found a manufacturer in China. “We realised the media wall in cooperation with Ambion. In addition to the acquisition of the rear projection glass, at this time, we benefit from the fact that for years, we have been an authorised service partner for Panasonic projectors”, says Tobias Lang, CEO of LANG AG.

A particular requirement came up in the conception. The wall including projectors was not allowed to take up too much space, but still needs to be accessible at any time for maintenance and repair. The solution was a closed room behind the glass through which the technician can reach any point of the wall. For reducing operating noises and to avoid overheating, the projectors were housed in a specially manufactured climate box. The desired interactive sections in the wall were implemented using primeTOUCH technology from LANG, which was especially developed in a curved design.

A representative of the manufacturer of the projection glass also travelled to Hamburg to supervise the installation. Six people were engaged with the installation for a whole day. The projection area on the glass has a resolution of 8,260 x 1,050 pixels.

Based on the permanent operation, the projectors need to be serviced regularly. About all six weeks, two of the projectors have to be exchanged for maintenance and repair at LANG’s authorised service department in Lindlar. Through this maintenance routine all devices are always up to date and warrant the audience a reliably true and impressive picture of the Tagesschau in a most modern studio.
