MEDIA BROADCAST Chooses T-VIPS Advanced DTT Solutions for German DVB-T2 Trial

T-VIPS Gateway

T-VIPS CP560 DVB-T2 Gateway is chosen to link DVB-T headends with DVB-T2 modulators in German DVB-T2 trial. DTT operators deploying DVB-T2 gain considerable bandwidth efficiency benefits which enable the launch of new revenue-generating services such as HD.

T-VIPS and MEDIA BROADCAST, Germany’s national DTT operator, today announce that after extensive testing MEDIA BROADCAST has chosen the T-VIPS CP560 DVB-T2 Gateway for DVB-T2 Trial Niedersachsen. This T-VIPS solution fills a vital gap in the DVB-T2 solution set for single frequency network (SFN) operation. The CP560 integrates with existing DVB-T headends and DVB-T2 modulators to enable DTT operators to take advantage of the considerable bandwidth efficiencies enabled by the migration to DVB-T2. These bandwidth efficiencies can be utilised to launch additional SD and HD channels, to increase video quality or to improve portable and mobile reception.

“T-VIPS is a natural partner for our DVB-T2 trial because they are one of the few companies in the world to design and deliver advanced processing solutions to answer the specific issues of DVB-T2 service operation,” says Bertold Heil, Head of Strategy & Business Development, MEDIA BROADCAST. “The fact that T-VIPS has already launched DVB-T2 solutions, can demonstrate industry leading field experience of processing solutions for DVB-T as well as delivering a unique and advanced approach to single frequency network operation made T-VIPS an ideal DVB-T2 trial partner.”

The CP560 DVB-T2 Gateways, which are now live at the trial transmitter sites of Lueneburg and Rosengarten, provide a central point of control for DVB-T2 networks, enabling the operator to take advantage of the more efficient spectrum utilization promised by next generation terrestrial broadcasting. Situated in the headend after the multiplexer, the T-VIPS DVB-T2 Gateway protects an operators’ investment in existing DVB-T infrastructure and allows broadcasters to take advantage of the increased bandwidth efficiency offered by DVB-T2.

“Being chosen to play a crucial role in the MEDIA BROADCAST trial of this important new broadcast standard is proof that we have been able to build upon our leadership position in advanced DVB-T solutions and carry that experience and expertise into DVB-T2,” says Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. “We’re excited to be part of this important trial with MEDIA BROADCAST as the undoubted advantages of DVB-T2 will make it a must have for DTT operators looking to launch HD and other advanced services.”

T-VIPS CP560 DVB-T2 Gateway

The CP560 is part of T-VIPS’ cProcessor product family, a line of compact, powerful and cost-effective products designed for advanced processing, multiplexing, monitoring and SI-handling of MPEG Transport Streams. The CP560 utilises the advanced processing capabilities of the cProcessor family, to re-arrange the MPEG Transport Stream into DVB-T2 Modulator Interface (DVB-T2 MI) format. Unlike traditional DVB-T solutions, the DVB-T2 Gateway provides centralized control of the DVB-T2 Modulator. The DVB-T2 Modulator Interface controls the modulator parameters and provides the very accurate timing required for SFN operation. The CP560 provides flexible interfacing with ASI or IP inputs, and DVB-T2 MI outputs over ASI and IP. Like all T-VIPS products, the CP560 has an elegant and intuitive web-based user interface, developed in close cooperation with T-VIPS’ customers. Product upgrades and new features are simply accessed through software key downloads.

MEDIA BROADCAST in DTT

MEDIA BROADCAST is Germany’s leading DTT operator and a sought-after partner for national and international broadcasting organisations. Since the beginning of digital television in Berlin in 2003, MEDIA BROADCAST has gradually been extending the availability of DTT for its customers. The timely planning and implementation of over 300 transmitters is proof of the high level of quality and dependability that can be expected by broadcasters. DVB-T2 represents the second generation of Digital Terrestrial Television and the new standard will result in further improvement in picture quality, as well as more advanced services. MEDIA BROADCAST plays an important role in the development of the new DVB-T2 standard at many different levels.

MEDIA BROADCAST began working on the development of DVB-T early. The media service provider was involved in implementing the current standard by contributing technological benchmark figures to the standardization committees. Important system tests were conducted and practical experienced was gained in DVB-T pilot projects. Concepts for the operation of DVB-T and for its market launch were developed and implemented in collaboration with the participants. Media and frequency-related framework conditions, in particular, were taken into consideration in the process. MEDIA BROADCAST actively participates in national and international regulatory and technical forums and workgroups. This expertise makes MEDIA BROADCAST the leading DVB-T operator in Germany.
