RED technology and workflows will be explained

'All you wanted to know about the RED camera but were afraid to ask' is the theme of a workshop being organised by the Guild of Television Cameramen. Manufactured by RED Digital Cinema Camera Company, the RED One can record directly to flash or hard disk at up to 4,096 x 2,304 pixels resolution. It features a single Super 35-sized CMOS sensor and a cinematography-industry standard PL mount.

RED technology and workflows will be explained, test shooting and grading demonstrated, with expert advice from Molinare and 4K London technicians. The workshop will be held on Friday October 22 in Theatre 1 at Molinare, 34 Fouberts Place, London W1F 7PX.

Timetable

10:00-10:30 Registration and refreshments.

10:30-10:45 Welcome and introduction from Mark Foligno (Managing Director, Molinare) plus Molinare Showreel.

10:45-11:45 The RED Camera: 4K overview and workflow from 4K London.

11:45-12:00 4K London showreel.

12:00-13:15 Camera shooting tests plus introduction to the Baselight grading facility by Molinare colourist.

13:15-14:00 Lunch.

14:00-14:30 4K Hands-on demo of RED camera, including ‘The Candle Test' to illustrate the how well the camera performs in very low light. Directly linked to the Baselight for immediate grade.

14:30-17.00 Grading demo on RED footage in Baselight 1. In this session a Molinare colourist will grade RED material shot by 4K London and talk through the pros and cons of RED grading. The footage will be pre-loaded during the lunch break. (Running teas and coffees to maximise Grade session talk time.)

17:00-17:15 Summary in Theatre 1.

About the Guild of Television Cameramen

Formed in 1972, the Guild of Television Cameramen has over 1,000 members in countries as far afield as Australia, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA. The majority work in aspects of television ranging from corporate video production through news and current-affairs, sports and light entertainment, to documentary and drama. The GTC is a non-profit-making organisation run by a council of volunteer television professionals. It is financed by subscription from its members as well as sponsorship from equipment manufacturers and suppliers. As a result, the GTC offers a channel for manufacturers to consult with working cameramen when designing new equipment. The GTC is an authoritative source of advice and information on all matters concerning television content production. Its aim is to preserve the professional status of television cameramen and to advance standards and expertise within the profession. Membership is open to anyone employed as a television camera operator or in any associated occupation.
