Introducing New Stereoscopic 3D Video Support

New SyncVu Capability for 3D Video Monitoring and Measurements

Tektronix announced new Stereoscopic 3D Video support for its new generation of advanced 3G/HD/SD-SDI waveform monitor, WFM8300 and WFM8200, and advanced 3G/HD/SD-SDI waveform rasterizers, WVR8300 and WVR8200.

Stereoscopic 3D Video Market

3D picture offers an enhanced experience for viewers in movie theaters. It has been proven that movie goers are willing to pay higher ticket prices for 3D movies. The box office success of a number of high profile 3D movies created a lot of interests from content providers and content distributors to deploy 3DTV with the hope of having the same financial success through an increased number of subscribers, higher subscription fees, and higher advertising revenue. In order to support 3DTV, there is an increasing need to generate more 3D content. However, in order to produce 3D content, several new 3D video equipment (including cameras, post production equipment, and test and measurement equipment) are required. Tektronix, being a market and technology leader in the broadcast test and measurement industry, thus launches a new set of 3D video monitoring and measurement features to satisfy the market needs.

Stereoscopic 3D Video Monitoring and Measurements

The 3D process is a relatively simple concept of combining two images, known as Left Eye and Right Eye, from two cameras that are separated by 65mm (the average distance between the two human eyes). One of the key monitoring elements is to ensure that the two cameras are well balanced and matched to create good quality 3D effects without causing viewers’ discomfort. That means the two images (Left Eye and Right Eye) must have the same brightness and color saturation. The simplest form of physical interface for 3D video acquisition is the use of the two HD-SDI signal paths, one for each camera, routed as two separate links (one for the Left Eye and one for the Right Eye) in either 1080i or 720p formats. Ensuring synchronization between the Left Eye link and the Right Eye link and that these links are not swapped at the input to the system is another key monitoring element critical to the viewers’ experience. In order to ensure suitable parallax between the Left Eye image and the Right Eye image, users also need to be able to measure the disparity between the two images.

New SyncVu Control Capability (with SIM Mode) for 3D Video Monitoring and Measurements

The new SyncVu control capability of the WFM / WVR 8000 series instruments allows users to quickly configure the instrument display to show the Left Eye image and the Right Eye image of the 3D content in a synchronized viewing mode. It works in conjunction with the Simultaneous Input Monitoring (SIM) mode and allows users to configure the settings for two SDI links (one for the Left Eye image and one for the Right Eye image) simultaneously. This allows users to monitor the Left Eye image and the Right Eye image side by side in waveform, vector, gamut (including the new Spearhead display for monitoring color saturation and lightness) and / or picture mode. Users can also monitor the timing between the Left Eye link and the Right Eye link with respect to the external reference. The Dual Link capability of the WFM / WVR 8000 series instruments also provides a method to combine and overlay the Left Eye image and the Right Eye image in waveform and picture mode for the 1080 formats which allows users to visualize the horizontal parallax of the 3D content.
